Had to go to the FPC after a mishap and had to get the Morning after pill. Have decided that I really should sort out a good form of contraception, but am not sure what one to get. I am useless with the pill so needs something that I can forget about...

I´ve got the copper coil, non hormone one. My gynae said no real difference in effectiveness between the two, but obviously the copper one is better if you have had an adverse reaction to pill/implant/injection because it contains no hormones. I´ve had two, first one totally problem free IIRC, this one still settling in so have had a couple of heavy periods (10 days plus, fairly crampy) but it´s definitely easing off now. Had the first one in for 3 years, and never had a problem with it, so I would wholeheartedly recommend it. I was totally useless at the pill too, culminating in the arrival of DS1......

Never had injection or implant so can´t give a very balanced view though.

FYI I'm about to start another thread on Health about side effects between Depo Provera 3month injection and Mirena Coil if anyone else is interested.

Flumpybumpy · 12/12/2006 10:52

I was on Depo-Provera for 5 years. Only had one side effect which was my periods stopped altogether (not such a bad thing). I wasn't too keen on being injected every three months but got used to it and it has actually cured my fear of needles! Came off to have DD & DS (only had to wait about 2 months for periods to come back).

Having Mirena coil fitted this afternoon after reading tons on posts on MN and discussing with GP.

Good to know chocqueen. I'm looking at the copper coil as well. I want something that doesn't have hormones and I don't have to think about it - AND is very effective

expatinscotland · 12/12/2006 11:01

How about the patch?

fortyplus · 12/12/2006 11:05

I talked to my GP about this - she said that implants are inhuman and she wouldn't give them to her dog!
She also said that she would prescribe them - but only to women who couldn't rely on remembering to take the pill and who were unsuitable for a coil.
There's lots on the internet about the Mirena coil - it releases hormones so you're at far less risk of ectopic pregnancy than with a conventional coil.

Dophus · 12/12/2006 11:09

I hated the injection. It took a year for my periods to return - I hat the idea of having a drug hangin around in me for so long.

I vote the Mirena. No periods, no hassle but painful onthe way in!

There's loads of threads on the Mirena here

twelvedaysofchristmas · 12/12/2006 11:14

Depo Provera made me mad and I also had a collapsed muscle in my bottom (which left a dent - yes you can snigger) from the deep injections.

Can't recommend the Mirena IUD highly enough though. Periods more or less stopped after three months and I was pregnant within 6 weeks of having it removed.

Stockingsofdinosaurs · 12/12/2006 11:15

But the progesterone is still in your body after the Mirena comes out isn't it? Or do you get a period within weeks?

SparklyXmasKat · 12/12/2006 11:17

asked about the patch, as that would have been ideal but they don't have them at the FPC...

i have a copper coil and its great

no side effects from horrible artificial hormones (like you get with the mirena, the pill, etc)

slightly heavier periods, but period lasts just 4 days for me

would thoroughly recommend it

jabberwocky · 12/12/2006 14:19

For those of you who can do hormones there's also the ring.

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 12/12/2006 18:56

prufrock don't worry I had to try it. If I could have had a coil I wouldn't even go there. As for the implant I had it out in an evening (DH had the kids) and drove myself there and back. I have the tiniest knick in my arm and a bruise the size of a 10 pence - and I do bruise easily.

I just think I don't get on with single hormones and have an odd shaped uterus for coil insertion. So I am back on the combined pill. I have had a few years off it and have no contra-indications so I am OK with it.

DarrellRivers · 12/12/2006 19:08

another vote for copper coil, no hormones to worry about and immediately reversible when removed,
had mine 1 year so far and no probs at all

mamijacacalys · 12/12/2006 20:02

Am on Implanon implant and no probs so far - no periods, yay. (BTW it is almost invisible beneath the skin of my upper arm - like a matchstick so only know it's there when you feel it beneath the surface of the skin).

Am not keen on coils as 2 people I know have had ectopics whilst using them.

No experience or opinion on injections!

LovelyKay · 12/12/2006 20:11

Another vote for the old-fashioned copper coil here. I had it fitted as emergency contraception (before ever even DD1 was even a notion) and had no problems at all.

Was PG with DD 5 months after removal and that delay was only because a) was a raddled old hag even then and b) DH was at sea for 3 of the 5 months!

Would recommend it to anyone who doesn't get on with the hormones or has a rubbish memory.
