Hi
I haven't read all the suggestions, so apols. if I'm repeating what's already been suggested. We bought a battery-operated "zapper" comb from boots. It was about £24, 2-3 years ago and it works brilliantly. We now use it once a week to check and if we find any, we use it daily until we're clear again. I chose this because we tend to have allergies and I'm asthmatic and I wasn't keen on using chemicals. My children have fairly short hair, so I'm not sure how this would work on long hair.
I hope you find a solution!

O.k so am i just lucky or am i not checking hard enough cos my dd1 has only had them once (at about age 2) and the other two have never had them despite dd1 being friends with a girl who constantly has them (through no fault of hers, another girl isn't being treated).

I'm worried i may be just missing them.

DD's have just had a disgusting and massive infestation! Tried a leave in lotion - Full Marks - which is supposed to kill lice and eggs but when wet combing the next day there were live ones so I don't think they work too well. I'm pretty sure DD2 got them first then passed them to DD1 and I thimk she had them for a while but I couldn't understand why I hadn't noticed them cos she wasn't scratching or anything. But apparently you can have lice for months and not know (unless you wet comb) and scratching isn't always a symptom as the itch is caused by an allergic reaction to the bites (lice survive by sucking your blood), not by the bites or moving around. Apparently you can tell how long they have been there by the nits, these are the white 'eggs' you can see stuck to the hair which are empty egg cases. they are laid quite close to the hair shaft so if they are halfway down the hair you know they have grown with the hair! Not that I'm a nit expert ro anything.
BTW, I always thought that lice were these really small things, so what on earth were the huge bugs I found in DD's hair (bout size of sunflower seeds) was not happy to see them!

dd was constantly coming home from school with nits. i tried every thing under the sun but by the end the nits were still living. the only thing that worked wasChineseWhispers shampoo and nit killer from the health shop. slight smell but can be used by anyone with asthma. my health visitor told me there are 2 types of solution (though i don't know what the difference is)and nits get immune to one type so phone the local health centre to find out what is working at the time.

gloworm · 20/05/2004 11:10

just a quick point on lice becoming immune to the various lotion and potions.
They will never become immune to Bioforce Neem Riddance(shampoo) or Maristows Biz Niz(conditioner) (both from health shop).
there are other health shop brands which lice will never become immune to either, but I can't think of them right now. the 2 mentioned are consistantly the ones we have the best customer satisfaction with

dinosaur, let me know how you find the bug buster combs. I've heard they are quite good.
if they are not so good your cousin can get maristow metal one in Letterkenny, have visited there a couple of times and they have a good health shop in the shopping centre.

No further advice just a funny story.Last week was ds birthdat and we took 10x10year old boys to a kid's comedian. When he sang the nit song he asked 'Who's got headlice?'and they were all leaping out of their seats to admit they had them and were actually competing as to who had the most!A far cry from my childhood when a trip to the school nit nurse brought shame on the whole family

Soulfly · 27/05/2004 10:20

I had forgotten i did this tread, lol.

Well i cut dd hair and put on teatree and lavendar spray on everyday. Touch wood she's been clear ever since.

I use thick conditioner evey night & comb through whilst dds 1&2 are in the bath. Afterwards I put in a leave in conditioner and then comb through again - using metal nit comb. It does take a while & is tricky with looking after dd3. After last infestation I again told dd1 class teacher who told me in the manner of an airhostess dealing with a tricky customer "that the problem was finished in her class"!!! Well there's someone in the school with a big nit problem!! Other parents just don't bother to sort it out. It just annoys me.

Tessiebear · 27/05/2004 20:12

My son goes to bed with lots of teddies. He got nits last week and we are at the stage where we are wet combing every night and still finding the odd baby bug. This morning i thought to wash all his teddies on the hot wash because nits can live for a day off the head and maybe are jumping on and off the teddies at night!!!! Worth a try anyway

gloworm · 28/05/2004 08:05

following on from tessiebears remark, sorry if this is the last thing you all need to hear

one of my customers was curious about the fact that lice can only be caught through head-to-head contact, and that they can't survive off the head. she had seen one crawl off her daughters head and along the back of the sofa! she put 1 lice on top of the kitchen work surface and put a glass over it.
it lived for.....5 DAYS!!!

maybe it was a one-off super lice!

gloworm · 28/05/2004 08:06

forgot to mention, my mum used to wash all bedclothes etc in a hot wash if we ever had lice.
