Calling Scottish Mums- Would Love your Opinions

We have been considering moving out of Glasgow- at present we live in a flat in the southside and would quite like to upgrade to a house but cannot do that here without moving to a grim area iykwim. Also we are a bit dissillusioned with Glasgow generally.
We have been considering Stranraer , see my other thread - sorry have not managed to do a link. It is in travel/ general advice. The replies have backed up what I was worried about.
Also have considered Stirling and the surrounding area, but the problem is the best areas are too expensive for us and Cambusbarron looked like a great contender until we looked at the primary school hmi report! Also there seemed to be a lot of wild kids hanging about on the street- really like the location otherwise. Dh lived in Stirling for about 7 years and we used to visit it a lot when we first met.
Anyway to cast the net wider I would really like your opinions on these and any other areas in Scotland that ;
1- have good schools but reasonable houseprices eg. 3 bedroomed under ?150,000
2- are semirural and have a good community feel iykwim
3 are commutable to a city or major town easily
4 have less drugs related problems, crime and violence than glasgow.
5 are good places for kids to grow up but have some things for adults too - sports centres, cinemas , good restaurants . Beautiful countryside
I know cheaper house prices usually means less desirable. So I know I am asking a lot .
I am hoping your insights will give me an insiders guide to living in different places- and this will help us to broaden our search. We are really stuck in a rut and are going round in circles and would really be grateful for your input

I posted on your other thread. Stranrear is pretty pants, but othger areas of Dumfries and Galloway are great - Annan, Moffat, langholm, Lockerbie, and all within easy distance of M74 for Glasgow.

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:37

MIL loves Moffat.

Again, I've never been there, either

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:38

Salty, I feel bad, but we found Stranear pitiful.

We went there to take the ferry to Ireland, but we were early so we had a look round.

DH said, 'F*ck the ferry. If I had to stay in this town I'd jump into that sea and take my chances swimming across just to be away.'

MrsSpoon · 08/12/2006 16:38

Dunfermline is still pretty good value and the town is going through (at long last) redevelopment so prices are likely to rise again. Have a look here for houses in your price range.

Stirling is lovely but expensive, Callander and surrounding towns/villages probably cheaper but more out of the way.

I love Glasgow it is my favourite city, always wanted to live there, but I have to concede the weather is better in the east, tends to be dryer, and Dunfermline is not too Fifey.

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 08/12/2006 16:39

LOL expat. that's what my DH always said too. then he started working in Livingston and realixed that Fifers aren't that bad!

MrsSpoon · 08/12/2006 16:39

Oh forgot to give this my usual NB 'I am not a Fifer'.

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:40

LOL, purple!

Aye, Livingston.

We looked round there. MIL said, 'It's full of neds fae Glasgae.'

santasaltire · 08/12/2006 16:40

I agree with your DH expat, it's a terrible place. The east of the region is great though

MrsSpoon · 08/12/2006 16:40

... and we've got a huuuge Primark now if that floats your boat.

purplemonkeydasheranddancer · 08/12/2006 16:43

i've never seen dh so happy as the day he left that job for one in edinburgh!

sooo, we can rule out:
certain areas of fife
livingston...

FiveGoldenFIMBOs · 08/12/2006 16:43

I have never had any desire to live in Fife, and have only ever been to most places on a day trip, but what is it that is awful about Fife?

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:44

Bo'ness is a shithole, too, from what I hear.

So's Bathgate.

Broxburn nice, but no train, so you need to drive.

on the other hand, excellent value for money for houses and good schools.

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:45

Gawd, people from Edinburgh are snobby like!

nailpolish · 08/12/2006 16:46

i lived in Markinch

near Glenrothes

they all went round Safeway in their baffies

and muttered to themselves at the bus stop

nailpolish · 08/12/2006 16:46

although markinch primary has a brilliant rep.

colette · 08/12/2006 16:47

I don't know - but my dh does not like it either. His work takes him about a lot

honestly, Fife is like "the place that time forgot"

MrsSpoon · 08/12/2006 16:48

Markinch >shudder

expatinscotland · 08/12/2006 16:48

I've got a dear pal in Lochgelly, who used to live in Dunfermline.

Her partner's from Glenrothes.

He couldn't sell up fast enough to buy a place w/her!

nailpolish · 08/12/2006 16:49

Lochgelly has the cheapest housing in the whole of the uk

its official

and its clear to see why

colette · 08/12/2006 16:49

have to go , keep it going please , even the negative is interesting

OP posts:
nailpolish · 08/12/2006 16:49

Glenrothes is just as bad

FiveGoldenFIMBOs · 08/12/2006 16:50

Dh's cousin has just got married - they live in Star (I think that is near Markinch).

FiveGoldenFIMBOs · 08/12/2006 16:52

My bf lives in Freuchie and works in Kirkcaldy.

nailpolish · 08/12/2006 16:52

omg Star is ok but not a shop for miles

i think Star is where posh Markinchers live

if you live in Star you are in the catchment for that posh school in Cupar

(Cupar is actually ok, and is on the east coast rail line)
