How do i give myself a makeover if i don't know what suits me ??

Now everything is sorted with regards to the house i can now turn my attention to me.
I am 25 (nearly 26) but increasingly feel like i am about 106. I wear make up but have been told before now that i don't look like i'm wearing any (it wasn't a compliment).
As for my clothes, well i'm just not sure what to wear so i'm always in jeans. I don't want to dress too young, but don't want to look like a grannie either.
For example, when i went out with my friend a few weeks ago i wore a denim skirt (above the knee) and 3/4 boots and a black top. I felt great in it but am i too old to wear stuff like that ??

Basically i just seem to have lost the knack of knowing what suits me and i'm stuck in a rut.

I could do with a trip to see Susanna and Trinny i think

If you get time for yourself, you ought to treat yourself shopping, and see what clothes there are that maybe you wouldn't normally go for, and try them on and see what they're like and what you think. You could go with a friend for opinions.

You could always go to Boots and go to one of those stand thingys where they do makeup and they usually suggest something, but depends on how you feel with customers running around you whilst you're getting makeup put on you. HTH

Oops forgot to put this bit in.

Trial and error I guess Im just saying, I eventually found the right look for me by experimenting and just getting tips from my friends and sister.

Just joking, do you look like someone famous, you could clone thier style?
I am often too embarresed to look in the mirror so dont take any advice seroiusly from me!

Nutcracker · 15/05/2004 20:57

Do they still do the free makeovers at the Body Shop, does anyone know ???
There make up is a bit more in my price range see.

Arh i'll tell her you said that Charlie (not really).

Erm anyone famous.........well my cousin always reckoned i looked like drew barrymore, but befor she got her act together. I used to get called Lydia at school cos they reckoned i looked like her out of Beetlejuice, which if i remember correctly was Winona Ryder ??

I have dark hair and brown eyes and am size 10/12 (oh and i wear glasses at the mo)

Im quite similar to you nutcracker. I have dark hair, and brown eyes. Im not one for much makeup so what I do is use wet and dry eyeliner, and wear chocolate brown eyeshadow, and I use those bronze pearls just to give my cheeks an "arabian" glow lol. I dont wear lipstick but use coloured lip gloss.

clothes wise, i wear smart jeans and casual tops, but when I want to feel a little more dressed up, I wear casual smart tops such as a black off the shoulder top

Nutcracker · 15/05/2004 21:13

I've just lost the knack really. When i was at school i knew what i liked and how i liked to look and never worried much about my appearance. I started wearing makeup at about 14 and never went out without it. I also used to get up early just to do my hair for school

I know things change as your priorities change and because i'm not working i suppose i don't really feel like i need to make an effort which is silly i know.

Just laetely if i go out anywhere i always end up regretting what i've worn or how my hair was e.t.c.

I've lost alot of confidence i think. At school i was popular enough and got asked out alot, and not having compliments now is affecting my confidence i think.

I know i sound sooo shallow now don't I.

Actually if i'm being honest i know exactly what has dented my confidence.
It's awful but when i was at school my best friend was a bit younger than me and overweight so i always got all the attention when we went out (not that i think i should of though).
The friend i go out with now, is a skinny thing, always in really nice trendy clothes and with her hair done e.t.c and i feel like such a plain jane next to her. We are the same age but i feel much older. She's always getting chatted up (stalked even )

I know i'm being very silly but there you go thats the truth.

Not at all, I went through a phase of that. But I never really wore make up before I had dd. Its only since Ive kicked out my ex, that Ive started to care what I look like. I even have to put make up on just to go to the shop!! lol

After having dd, I lost a lot of my confidence, and it didnt help that when I was with ex, he never took me out, and would call me fat and horrible things like that.

So I decided that the only way I could see myself building up my confidence again was to do something to make me feel happy about me. I brought new clothes that weren't really me, like club tops and skirts etc (ive always been one for tshirts and jeans), and my mum gets avon, and I looked through that and they had make up starter kits, which I brought. Since then Ive just been experimenting. You're size can be found in all clothes stores, so you wont have problems with finding things, just the problem of deciding what to try on

oneofeach · 15/05/2004 21:24

Nutcracker, you sound lovely and I definitely don't think you are too old to wear the denimn skirt etc. I'm nearly ten years older than you and if I had good legs then I would wear shorter skirts with boots too. But I know exactly what you mean. I love shopping, trying and buying clothes but I feel I've lost the art of knowing what to pick and making decisions in shops!

lou33 · 15/05/2004 22:38

Some Top Shop stores have personal shoppers. You get a big dressing room away from the hoards, free cold drinks, magazines, and they will scour the store looking for stuff for you to try. It might be nice to do something like that, and get a viewpoint of how others would dress you. They might give you a new perspective on what to wear. Would that be any good?

lou33 · 15/05/2004 22:41

I would say you were NOT too old to wear a denim skirt either. I managed to embarrass dd1 for the first (and probably not the last) time on Friday, for coming home with a 13 inch leather and chain mini skirt for ME to wear (I'm 37 btw)! I hardly think a just above the knee skirt is too shocking.

Dh loves my skirt though

Nutcracker · 16/05/2004 14:37

LOL Lou My Dp appreciated my short skirt too.

I used to roll my skirt over several times when i was at school so i don't know why it bothers me sooo much, and i did think it looked o.k.

My friend said we will set aside a day for just me and her to go shopping for clothes and stuff. I trust her judgment so it should be fine.

My Mum bought my sisters and I a makeover with a colour consultant for our birthdays a few years ago. It was fantastic and she explains which colurs suit you, whihc make up suits your skin tones best and so on. I really enjoyed the session and it makes a real difference when shopping for clothes. Don't know how much it costs (£60?) but I think it was really worth doing.

aloha · 16/05/2004 21:39

Use a personal shopper in a store - Top Shop do them and John Lewis are really surprisingly good and not aimed at middle-aged matrons (really!). You do NOT have to buy anything and they will help you see yourself differently. Book yourself a makeover at a Bobbi Brown makeup counter. By far the best makeovers and the most natural. Again, you don't have to buy but the lipglosses are fantastic. At 25, my darling Nutcracker, you aren't too old for ANYTHING. I am 40 and I would wear that. You are so incredibly young. Five years younger than Kate Moss, and TEN years younger than Kylie, and you wouldn't say they were too old for a shortish denim skirt, would you?

Nutcracker · 16/05/2004 21:55

Your right Aloha i wouldn't say kylie was too old to wear a short skirt.

I think i'm just having a crisis of confidence at the mo.
I always do this when the warmer weather comes. Every year i say to myself that next year summer won't take me by surprise, but it always does, and i always end up looking in the wardrobe and not having a thing to wear.

It's my birthday in June so i'll have to ask for soe vouchers for clothes shops i think.

bobs · 16/05/2004 22:49

Hey I'm 44 and I'd wear a denim skirt if I could find one to suit.
Larger Boots stores do makeovers so if you pick the right counter it shouldn't be too pricey. If you've got good legs wear short skirts, if you've got good boobs, ditto - I find t-shirts bras wonderful. A pair of black dressy trousers are a good start as you can match them with any top. I did a colour test once to find out what colours suit me (apparently I should have got married in white as cream was a no-no ). I don't know where you can get one now.
Having said all that, perhaps you should ignore me as I'd still be in leggings if DH hadn't burnt them .
Good luck and have fun.

jampot · 16/05/2004 23:13

Nutty - my pal and I had our colours done by a woman who comes to your house. She drapes all these fabrics over you and you really can see which colours "lift" you and which make you look ill. I have pale skin, v dark brown hair and blue eyes (Irish)and I'm winter. Paid about £45.

mummytojames · 16/05/2004 23:36

tescos got some lovely summer dresses in now and quiet cheap as well and as you got the figure you would carry them well and worried about looking to young you only a year older than me and my fav clothes is black trousers or leggins with t-shirt and i wouldnt think twice abuut going out in a summer dress even though people think i sometimes dress to young forr my age i tell them that might be because i am young and realy you should take the same attitude
imo anyway

Bettybloo · 17/05/2004 02:13

How about having a mistake swap night with some of your girlfriends - you all bring round clothes and makeup that you've bought and hardly worn and swap around - that way at least you get to try stuff on and get an honest opinion from your friends - sometimes styles/colours that you've never considered andthey turn out to really siut you. I've got green eyes and always wear blues and pinks, but found out this way that appaarently khaki and olive suits me much better.
Or cut a few bits out of magazines and see if there's a general style to things that appeal to you to make a bit of a plan before you head out to the shops.
Ps I think if you feel great in something then wear it as much as possible - it's how you feel that comes across - so get that denim skirt and boots on and strut your stuff.
