Help me please! I have 24 hours to work out how to move my itunes library onto home computer from work laptop without losing any or I'll lose the lot! Many, many thanks in advance!

I don't know, but I'm going to be watching this thread. Just bought a new computer and need to transfer it all. I looked at the instructions on the Help but it was frankly bewildering, to me anyway .

Sorry no help. But think of it as a bump!

spykid · 06/12/2006 14:35

When we did this I think dh had to transfer the mp3 files and then reinstall them on itunes.
Took bloody for ever!

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:35

Do you have an external / portable hard-drive? That would make it easy.

Not sure how you would do it otherwise tbh.

Hub2Dee might be along to help!

Piffle · 06/12/2006 14:36

put it onto cd?

spykid · 06/12/2006 14:36

Ah yes,,,,we also used external hard driv

CarolSheetTurner · 06/12/2006 14:38

Do you have iPod video? If you have the Help tells you can use it as a portable hard drive for this purpose. I just didn't feel up to working out the instructions.

Actually, you're making me feel guilty, i really must sort this computer out and do this stuff...

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:39

otherwise i think you would have to burn onto dvds (bigger than cds!) but it would take a LONG time and maybe a lot of dvds too.

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:44

Or the other way would be if you had an ethernet or LAN cable? (hope I'm not talking shit here)

So you connect one machine to the other and form a sort of network.

Got any of these things? Or anyone you can borrow them from?

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:46

Also as CT said, if you have an ipod with big enough memory you could just use that?

MrsMcClaus · 06/12/2006 14:47

Thanks CarolSheetTurner, know what you mean about Apple's Help!

aDadonthexmasherry - I do have one, how would I do it, just try and save the whole library? I should have also said that DH has a library already on the home pc which i don't want to corrupt, can you have two?

Thanks for all your help!

I know you can have two, but I've still not worked out how to transfer them, so can't help there.

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:52

yes just save/copy the whole library to your external hardrive I would have thought.

Once on there it's safe obviously. I dont know about having two libraries. I dont see why not.

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 14:56

I THINK you select FILE in the toolbar at the top, select the 'export library' option and then select your external hard drive as the destination. You should be able to see if it is copying loads of files over.

I am no techy genius though, so if you've got anyone you could confirm this with, it might be better!

Kelly1978GotRunOverByAReindeer · 06/12/2006 14:58

the thing is, if you save that file it is relatively small and I think it only saves the titles which are linked to the actual music files on your pc. SO you would have the library but not the actual music. I think when dp did this he moved all the music files over manually and placed them in the itunes folder under programn files. Otherwise you will lose the music.

aDadOnTheXmasSherry · 06/12/2006 15:08

hmmmm. that's worrying info from kelly then! Told you i dont know much.

I think the way we did it (well, my techy friend did it) was just to copy over the entire i-tunes folder with all its internal folders to the external hard drive. That way you can be sure nothing is lost.

MrsMcClaus · 07/12/2006 09:24

Thank you all very much, I shall have a bash at transferring both lots of files to the external hard drive and see if it works. I'll let you know how I get on and how you set up 2 libraries just in case you ever need the info.

foxinsocks · 07/12/2006 09:27

there is a 'how to do this' (and it describes exactly what you want to do) in the itunes support thing on the apple website

I'll find it for you....

foxinsocks · 07/12/2006 09:28

here you are - moving your library to a new computer

if that's not what you want, there are several other features on how to do something similar

MrsMcClaus · 07/12/2006 10:30

Thank you Foxinsocks backing up onto CD as I write

Not quite an answer to your thread but when you go to iTunes to download, instead of going directly to the site got to www.nectar.com, register your nectar card and then click on Nectar eStores. You can be transferred to the iTunes site from there but you will earn Nectar points every time you download.

I have managed to save tons of points and are using them for a holiday next year!!!

What a great tip! Thank you! Currently filling my 3rd cd.....

CarolSheetTurner · 07/12/2006 12:01

OK, I'm biting the bullet and sorting this out. Am going to try using my iPod as an external hard drive. Away I go...

MrsMcClaus · 07/12/2006 12:11

Ok took 6cds to back up my library. Will try the transfer at home tonight and let you know how I get on!

OP posts:
CarolSheetTurner · 07/12/2006 13:52

Hurrah! I've done it. Took a little while, trundling up and down the stairs between the two computers, but looking after ds2 on the way as well. Once I got going with the instructions it was actually really straightforward and now it's done! i have to go through and untick stuff again that I don't want on the iPod atm, as it didn't save that, but everything else is perfect. (She said touching wood in superstitious manner.)

MrsMcClaus · 07/12/2006 15:20

Well done!
