We are invited for a friend's baby christening, what is the best present when we are not the godparents? Definitely don't want to give the classic silver spoon, money box etc.
Was thinking about personalised nursery rhymes book/baby blanket or maybe some toy (eg Noah's ark)?
Any advice highly appreciated
We've never been to a christening before so struggle a bit :-D

My children were older when we got them Christened so we managed to avoid all the silver tat things!
They got lots of lovely things personalised with their names though, the few that stand out are - crockery, cutlery, place mats, those pictures of their names where the letters are made out of animals, a story book that you add their name to so they're part of the story (DS got Spider-Man, DD disney princesses) and DD got a ragdoll who is wearing a dress with her name and the date of the Christening on

These are a nice idea if you know where the baby was born (postcode at least):

Oh! And they both got a leather bound bible (DS blue, DD pink) that's engraved/embossed(?) on the front with their name and the Christening date
Don't know how I forgot those - they're probably my favourite gifts they received

DD got various collections of bible stories and a crocodile alphabet jigsaw which was nice.

I'm now an athesist, but I was christened 43 yrs ago and was given the most stunning illustrated bible. I still look at it and learnt my bible stories from it. It's much loved.

Other things I have given are 'classic' illustrated children's books such as Wind in the Willows. There's actually a beautifully illustrated Harry Potter out now if you think of when they're older?

Sorry just to add to the book thing, if you live in a bigger city could you look around for any forth coming children's author/illustrators doing an event? They will sign and dedicate one of their books.

We had a nice silver cutlery set that we use daily along with lots of other keepsakes
As a guest we have bought the 'lost my name' books - you can add a dedication in the front too
