leaky pipe - poo over garden - how long before it is safe?

A leaky pipe has meant that poo and water have been leaking onto our lawn. How long before the dcs can play out there again? Is there anything I can do to help the process along a bit? TIA!

That happened to us at our old house, but it was out in the lane, although a bit of raw sewage flooded over into our garden. I big blue lorry came from the council (environment dept) and did a clean up operation with chemicals and stuff. They said to keep animals and kids off the grass until it had rained a few times... took about 2 weeks I think.

Not sure what chemicals they used.

So I need to contact the environmental heath dept?

Just spoken to my hv, and becuase of the amount concerned she isn't worried and has just said to not use the garden for a couple of weeks.

Hmmm.

I would have them come and have a look.

I think the environment dept would come up, but check they aren't going to charge you coz the pipe is on private land. Our spillage was out on the public highway, but tipped over into our garden.

Surely her taxes shuld be payment enough

Perhaps I should clarify, this was one poo in the bath and it is the bath pipe that has leaked?

Doesn't sound like a lot of pooh really - sunlight is the best thing to break down the sewage, but it might take a bit longer in winter. Jeyes Fluid is used by the professionals for cleaning up such stuff - but it might kill your lawn! I would just gather up any "solid" matter and maybe get your children to wear wellies when they are outside for a bit (and of course wash their hands when they come in!)

paulaplumpbottom · 01/12/2006 13:27

I'm not following poo in the bath???????

nearlythree · 01/12/2006 13:29

Accident by a dc, paula.

I remember my nan using Jeyes Fluid, thank you.
