Ok I have to start doing my hall, stairs and landing and I am struggling to know how to even go about it.

To say it is in a state is a huge understatement, and had I seen it before I moved in then the HA would have been doing it themselves, but anyway.

There is a dado rail but it is made up of about 3 different types of dado, which you probably wouldn't notice unless you looked hard, but I know and it bugs me, plus there are a few bits missing.

Second problem is the bottom half of the wall. It is cream but has red raised bits in, all over and on most of the skirting boards, plugs sockets too.

I just don't know where to start with it or quite what to do. I would like to rip off the dado, find someway of getting the bottom half of the wall smooth again and then paint the whole lot cream from top to bottom, but I don't know how.

My mums suggestion is to sand down all the wood, so dado, skirting, and stairs and then just paint over the awful walls. That would make it look better but only seems like half a job to me as i'll still have odd dado and missing bits etc.

My budget is £0 but thankfully already have some paint I can use, but can't stretch to anything like wooden cladding for bottom half or anything like that.

What shall I do ??

Hi nutty
there is a paint you can get which could be applied over the uneven wall. It's called Crack-free ceilings by polyfilla. You would need to get as much of the bumpiness off first- using a scraper or wallpaper remover solvent and then sanding.
If the dado is wood- can it be cranked off and then smoothed underneath with sander.

unfortunately the only way it is going to be completely smooth agin is by re- plastering or if you want to hide it by wallpapering.( castly I know)
I have a bumpy wall an have used suede paint on it( just picked any colour- it is made by Crown) and it gives a suede look finish. I then painted the whole lot with cream one coat. Because of the general texture you don't notice the bumps so much.
hope this is of help

Thanks, some good ideas there, will look into that. Am worried that removing the dado may give me more problems than I need.

I hate decorating. lol
