Hi

I've seen a few posts recently about a PayPal scam where you get sent emails that look like they're from PayPal but are actually a scam.

I keep getting them. The problem is that I have recently set up a PayPal account and am taking email payments using PayPal and therefore don't want to ignore these emails if they are genuine. But given what I've read previously, I'm loathe to even click on the link in the mail.

The subject line of the mail is: Please restore your account access.

And this is what the email says

We recently reviewed your account, and we need more information about your business to allow us to provide uninterrupted service. Until we can collect this information, your access to sensitive account features will be limited. We would like to restore your access as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.

----------------
Why is my account access limited?

Your account access has been limited for the following reason(s):

We have reason to believe that your account was accessed by a third party. Because protecting the security of your account is our primary concern, we have limited access to sensitive PayPal account features. We understand that this may be an inconvenience but please understand that this temporary limitation is for your protection

It then gives a case ID and a link to the 'resource centre' to complete the steps to removing limitations.

Is this just a scam?

My husband thought he'd received a dodgy paypal email last night so instead of clicking on the link in the email he went to the paypal site himself and looked at his account details. Turns out it was a genuine email but you can't be too careful. Maybe you could do that to? It's worrying isn't it?

GeorginaA · 28/11/2006 06:52

It's a scam, I've had billions of those. The easy way to tell is hover your mouse over the link (without clicking) and look at where the URL is really pointing - it'll be somewhere completely different.

If ever you're really worried, go into a browser and manually type www.paypal.com and log in as normal (NEVER use the link in one of those types of emails). Any genuine issue will be available through your account details there and you won't have gone via the potential phishing email to check.

MrsJohnCusack · 28/11/2006 06:53

It sounds completely scamworthy to me
Don't do it! I'm sure they have a 'contact us' thing through the website, ask them if you're unsure but I would NEVER trust an email like this, ever.

JoshandJamie · 28/11/2006 06:57

When I hover over the link it comes up with the following URL:

ppl-account.com/paypal

SCAM - either delete it or forward it to Paypal

JoshandJamie · 28/11/2006 07:08

I just emailed PayPal because if I forwarded the mail it would have confirmed my email address to them and have already received a reply from PayPal saying that it is a scam.

How do these people get away with things like this???

Joshand jamie i was told by ebay/paypal that if the email is legit it will appear in your ebay account. If it is not there as well as in your emails it has not been sent by ebay/paypal.

GeorginaA · 28/11/2006 07:15

ppl-account.com/paypal

Definitely a scam then - it's not from paypal.com

Agree with kitty that genuine email shows up in your account as well as in your email box.

foxtrot · 28/11/2006 07:33

definately a scam. NEVER click on a link in an email claiming to be from abay or paypal. Open your internet browser and log on to the site in the normal way.

Beelliesebub · 28/11/2006 07:35

I'm always getting these, I don't even bother opening them I just forward them straight on to [email protected] and if I get an ebay email that looks suspect they get forwarded straight to [email protected]... Apparently they're only a threat if you click on a link, unfortunately dh clicked on one once and I had to change all our passwords, it was a nightmare.
