i'm a childminder and last week one of my mindees mums had her car stolen from outside her house
we have two cars and because she couldnt afford to hire a car or buy a car we have lent her our second car for 6 mths (it was due to be taxed so she is taxing it) we have the car serviced and mot each year and the car is 4 yrs old
anyway her insursance note came on weds so she picked the car up (needs taxing on fri)
she phoned me today, she had to be towed off the moterway as the head gasket is about to go

how upset am i, she needs the car for monday for work and wants us to pick the car up from her and fix it
hubby thinks she should pay half as we are lending it her for 6 mths, he also thinks she was driving fast
dont really feel like spending £300 near christmas on something i do not really need
what would you do?

oh dear, why did the head gasket go, or about to go? Dh says she should have checked the coolant or something...

dmo · 25/11/2006 21:48

no indication of gasket about to go
what would you do?

ummm... to be honest, it fix it. I doubt she did the damage that quickly... its one of those things I think. Its hard to say though, id be abit annoyed and miffed. But, she didnt break it... it happened to go when she had loan of the car...

dmo · 25/11/2006 21:58

your right
just miffed as you said
thats life i guess

there is nothing you can do to cause or prevent the head gasket going really so it wasn't her fault.

but if your not charging her anything for the loan of the car i think i would ask her to pay half at least.

I think you are incredibly generous to loan her the car at all so she shoudl be gratefull.
but if her car has been stolen could she not claim her insurance? i doubt it would take more than a couple of weeks

I would fix it too. I don't think driving fast would cause it and,, if at the end of the day if you don't fix it you will still have a car that does not work but with bad feeling between you and one of your customers.

dmo · 25/11/2006 22:06

there is no bad feeling its one of those things

insurance will pay but its time and paper work and she starts her new job 20 miles away on monday

going to book it in the garage on monday but if the bill is alot it will be going on my parents drive till i can fix it
