Driving after a c-section

I remember someone telling me that the no driving for 6 wks was a myth and it was only when you feel you could do an emergency stop that you could drive again.

How soon did you drive and did you have to mention it to your insurance company?
I have had a previous c-section but did not need to drive for ages so didn't really think about when I would be ready.

Thanks

Three weeks. The hosp said if I can do an emergency stop, I'd be ok.

After 4 weeks i phoned my doctors and she said if i had suitable movement (wasnt stiff or majorly sore) to go ahead.
But i'd get approval from a dr because i heard a rumour that your insurance can be invalid if you were to have an accident whilst your driving against the dr's instruction.
I dont know if this is correct, but its what i heard

I phoned my insurance company and they really weren't sure. Eventually someone got back to me and told me that I needed the all clear from my doctor. I had a slow recovery anyway so I just asked at my 8 week check but if I had one again, I'd be asking them a lot earlier.

Hope this helps.

My insurance company told me to drive when I felt I could. I could so I did. Six days.

4wks I was told and my insurance company said whenever I felt safe enough! In the US I believe you can drive when you feel like it (but then they don't seem to sterilise formula bottles either ).

The 6 weeks thing is a myth. But phone your insurance company, because they all have different policies. Mine (Direct Line) said they don't have any written policy on this, you should just drive when you feel you can, and they didn't require a written doctor's note.

I drove after 3 weeks. Read the small print on insurance as apparently some insurers say you cant drive for a set time after major surgery (or so my midwife said!) Was also told that could drive as soon as could do emergency stop, midwife said to jump on spot 5 times and if it hurts dont drive!!!!!

I didn;t drive for 6 weeks after DS1 (emergency CS, lots of complications) I didn' t feel able to

3 weeks after DS2 (planned CS) felt fine. Ring up your insurance company. Mine (direct line) said there's no restriction aftre an op, as long as you haven't been instructed not to by a doctor.

msnomer · 24/11/2006 15:33

thanks for all those replies. I'll give the insurance company a ring. I like the tip about jumping on the spot 5 times!

thanks again. (have been playing around with a name change!)

I think the general rule about invalidating your insurance is if you drive AGAINST A DOCTORS INSTRUCTIONS (i.e. your doctor has specifically told you not to).

Which is not the same as your doctor hasn't specifically told you you can.

In other words, unless your doctor says "you must not drive" then you can drive

Obv if you feel comfortable with it.

I was told 9 weeks but I drove after 4 weeks as there was nothing in my insurance that said otherwise.
