ds(10)and dh are off that big football match in cardiff next week (FA cup?). It will be a long coach ride to and from london, plus lots of standing around in crowds. Sounds like an extremely stressful and boring day to me. Waiting to be shot down in flames now! But really, I'm thinking about it from ds's point of view.

Dh is wonderful with ds and I know he will look after him, but well, ds isn't really into football. Never watches it on TV, never plays it, has just started after school coaching and wants to leave after 2 sessions. He has got carried along by other people's enthusiasm recently, namely his best friend and his dad's support of Millwall.

I just hope that ds isn't too disillusioned next saturday. Can he take his gameboy? I know emotions will run high as well and I am worried about his safety if he starts wandering off or being silly. I'm not sure exactly what is worrying me but I have bad vibes about it. Worried he'll be bored and get stroppy and worried about the dangers of being in such a big football crowd. Any hints and tips welcome.

lucky him! He will be fine it is a MASSIVE day out and full of exceitement, only worry I would have is that Millwall Fans have a bit if a reputation but you prob know that already!
I have been before with an 8 yr old who is neither here nor there with footy and he loved it, still didn't know what the score was or who was playing!

Tigermoth, has he been to any other matches? If not, well what a game to go to! The atmosphere will be terrific. I've been to quite a few big games in the past at Wembley, and as the others say, I'm sure there wouldn't be any trouble, it will be extremely well policed. He would probably have to leave the gameboy on the coach during the game, I should imagine.

thanks for the comments. Good idea to work out a contingency plan once they have arrived at the game. Do you really think they won't let ds take his gameboy into the stadium? wow - security is tight!

I hope you are right about the atmosphere making the event special. I know it's a rare, rare thing for Millwall to make the FA cup, hence this special treat. Dh has not yet booked coach seats for them as he was thinking of saving money and driving down, but I feel it's too much to do in a day and don't want to compromise their safety. So dh is now going to see if there are any coach tickets left.

Tigermoth ... I am not into football that much at all but one of the best days of my life was when I went to a proper big game ...
My boyfriend at the time thought it would be a great present to give me to take me to see Liverpool play Spurs (in the days when Gazza and Gary Lineker played for Spurs) ...
We stood at the Kop end and I just loved it ...
I reckon your son will have the time of his life!

Well at least it's going to be a day to remember especially if millwall win! 50 years on I wonder if ds be telling his grandchildren about the time his dad took him to see the FA cup?

Was this today? Hope it's gone well, and that ds1 and dh want to go to loads more games together in future (Have you had a nice day with ds2 too).

tigermoth · 22/05/2004 18:27

won't know how millwall fans dh and ds1 have enjoyed seeing manchester win till I get off mumsnet We don't have broadband so they can't get through on the landline. I have had a good day with ds2, but up at a strange hour for us - 6.00 am - as that was the time dh and ds1 were leaving.

My ds bores me to tears with football talk. Am tempted to start a thread "making football interesting for a 36-year-old" ...

Hope he had a great time

gothicmama · 22/05/2004 18:42

Spacemonkey if watching on telly look at those legs if just talking ask about offside rule. Hope your boys had fun tigermoth

jodee · 25/05/2004 08:49

Oh yes, what did ds1 think of the game - is he a convert? I would be interested to know what they both thought of the Mill Stad, I'm going there on Saturday (now off to start a related thread).

tigermoth · 26/05/2004 07:24

Ds had a fab day. He came back full of football talk.

Jodee, he did say the size of the crowd in the stadium frightenend him at first, but he didn't mention anything negative about the stadium itself. I will ask for a lowdown and if he says anything worth repeating, I'll tell you.

Hope you have a good time when you visit. It's quite a long treck for you, isn't it?
