can you buy a car if you don't drive, register the log book in your name and then insure someone else to drive it??

[scratches head]
not sure
I seem to remember having to put my Driver Number on the DVLA registrataion and log book forms, which you couldn't do if you had no driving licence...

You may have to be named on the insurance though - in case it gets stolen or damaged - whether you can drive or not.

I don't think you can, because we were going to do that when I only had a provisional.

hulababy · 20/11/2006 18:02

I am sure the car I had when I was learning to drive was bought in my name, under my ownership.

I really did think that anyone can buy a car???

Kelly1978 · 20/11/2006 18:06

I'm tryign to find the forms and if you apply for a replacement tot he registration form it doesn't ask for driver's licence, jsut proof of ID, so you can use a passport instead.

hulababy · 20/11/2006 18:07

Once you have bought a car the vehicle will need to be registered in your name with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

To register you need:

To register and tax your vehicle using application forms V55/4 or V55/5 you must also provide, either your photocard driving licence or one original document which confirms your name and one original document which confirms your address.

Documentation confirming your name

current DVLA paper driving licence
United Kingdom or European Union or foreign passport
marriage certificate
decree nisi or absolute
birth certificate

Documentation confirming your address

utility bill valid within the last three months eg gas, electricity, water, landline telephone
bank or building society statement valid within the last three months
medical card
council tax bill for current year

why cant you apply for a provisional license? would that solve the problem?

SparklyGothKat · 20/11/2006 18:15

I think you can, trying to remember if my first car was registered in my name. DH was insured to drive it. DH thinks its ok.

Quootiepie · 20/11/2006 18:18

not with some insurers... you had better check the specific insurer... DH has my car, and I had his for a while because of insurance, now he is on both log books.

you give your details as the registered keeper and the other person's details as main driver
