Things I thought I'd never do...which make me feel like my mother

Today, ladies, I am arranging flowers in church.

As I stood there last night, reccy-ing the situation, I had a mild panic attack. I have to do it for ds's christening tomorrow, but at the moment I feel like a fully paid up member of the Women's Institute.... sigh

Please, someone reassure me that I won't be crystallising flowers for my sugarcraft class next.

You'll be posing nude for calendars next PPH

Janstar · 07/05/2004 09:06

Oi! I gave a cake decorating lesson to my daughters yesterday!

Janstar · 07/05/2004 09:07

Kayleigh is right, the WI ain't what it used to be.

CountessDracula · 07/05/2004 09:33

ROFL PPH!

Lisa78 · 07/05/2004 09:34

I have reached the age where I open my mouth and my mothers voice comes out - its enough to make a grown woman cry
My elder sister says its worse for her, she has reached the stage where she puts a swimsuit on and my mothers thighs come out...

eefs · 07/05/2004 09:35

I found myself spitting on a hnky to clean my son's face last week - i never thought I'd do that!

Lisa78 · 07/05/2004 09:35

So PPH, how DO you crystallise flowers?

Lisa78 · 07/05/2004 09:35

ugh eefs!

kittyb · 07/05/2004 09:42

told ds and his friend (both 2 1/2)that I didnt care who had started the fight! I remember how unfair it was when my mum said that to us ("..but it was him..."

kittyb · 07/05/2004 09:43

how did I do that wink face? I didnt know I knew how to do that

Nimme · 07/05/2004 09:48

Yes - have also reached stage where I seem unable to have an original thought in my brain. I say everything my mother said - but AT LEAST I DON'T FOLD THE BLOODY TOWELS IN 3 AND 3 AGAIN WHICH REQUIRES A CLEAN WORK SURFACE NEARBY!!!!

Frenchgirl · 07/05/2004 09:51

time for a blue rinse PPH?
It's worse in my case, I'm starting to sound like my dad!!! Arghhhhhhhhhh

princesspeahead · 07/05/2004 19:53

oooooooooh, I must say they look luverly. I did a spanking job. right, lisa, I've been looking on the internet and apparently you crystallise flowers by brushing them with eggwhite and then icing sugar (sounds disgusting). I'm going to dive straight in with a delphinium... that should make me a legend down the Nether Fitzbollocks WI

fairyfly · 07/05/2004 20:23

Pph, i actually do that to, i wouldn't worry, my excuse is i love flowers, i haven't joined any institute yet and i still behave appalingly it's fine

Tommy · 07/05/2004 20:44

I'm afraid, on a couple of occasions when there has been no wet wipe handy, I have spat on a tissue and wiped DSs' faces with it. I used to HATE that when my Mum did it to me.
I always apologise when I do it though

littlemissbossy · 07/05/2004 20:48

Tommy, I admit I too have recently done this to my ds yuk!!! makes me feel sick just thinking about it

furniture · 07/05/2004 21:09

I cooked biscuits for the first time IN MY LIFE the other day. I'll be buying an iron next ...

bran · 10/05/2004 11:05

Think yourself lucky PPH, sometimes I say something and discover I've turned into my grandmother.

SenoraPostrophe · 10/05/2004 11:32

lol! I let dd sit in the doc's waiting room with a really snotty face rather than spit 'n' wipe. Just couldn't bring myself to do it! (Mind you, if I had, we still would have been the scruffiest people in there)

Nutcracker · 10/05/2004 11:47

My kids were in hysterics last week when they saked me what was for tea, and i replied 'a walk round the table'.
I don't even know what it means, i just remember my mom saying it.

One saying of hers i will never repeat is saying to my Dd's 'your hair won't go curly if you don't eat your crusts'.
I was devestated when my hair didn't go curly.
She said it to them once, and i immeidatly told them it wasn't true

princesspeahead · 10/05/2004 13:44

I had that too nutty (not the curly hair bit, I've always had that...) but I lived in Canada and had a scottish nanny who said "If you eat your crusts you'll be able to see all the way to Scotland". Ate them, and was outraged to then realise that she had been lying to me. I remember feeling betrayed! I was three.

I stop and look in peoples' gardens and say things like "oh, that's so pretty" or "I wonder what that plant is?" I remember when my Mum did that I would walk off in embarrassment.."Mu-um, it's someone's garden!"

Plus say things to kids like "I don't care who started it...you finish it!"

Have fights with friends (in the manner of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted) over the money for a coffee "here, you have it," "no, I'll pay," "have the money," "no, here, have the money, please," "go on, go on, go ooooon." When I was a kid and my Mum used to do this with her friends I would think "cor, whe I'm a grown-up I'll just go yeah, thanks, I WILL have the money!"

gingerbear · 10/05/2004 14:22

PPH, was your nanny Mrs Doubtfire???
