how long do you think you could last with 2 kids, and no cooker or even a kitchen?

its been like this since july

i never thought, when we moved it would take this long to get it sorted. the kitchen was in a bit of a mess so we decided to make it the first job and began ripping units out so the layout could be moved around. the new cooker is actually here, but its still in the garage as the kitchen is too much like a building site to connect it up yet.

ok, moan over. the end is in sight. the plasterer is here today skimming the whole room and ceiling, lovely mucky job for me to clean up after , and the new back door goes in at the weekend, closely followed by the kitchen fitter arriving next monday, so the end is in sight. i will soon be able to give up microwave cookery

I did 6 months last year!
Never again!

We did three months when I was little, we moved the Kitchen/living room into Mom and Dad's room. Not a pretty site with 5 children

ComeOVeneer · 20/11/2006 19:46

We only had 1 child when we did our kitchen, we invested in a combination microwave so were able to cook most things, but I don't envy you.

well today is a crunch day, after living for 3 weeks with only the sink and one old unit left, the sink is going, going gone!. dh is taking it out right now as the builder is coming later to take out the window and replace it with french doors. so until the new kitchen goes in, which, thank goodness is being started on monday, we will be washing up in a bowl in the bath, ho hum!.

I've done 3 months with no oven and now have got an oven but no hob. I've hated it so hats off to you for doing without both!!

I only lasted 2 weeks and I had 2 little plug in hotplates and a microwave, so could do most of what I needed. My worse moment was when I came home to do some tea for the children, only to find no electricity or water. Luckily I had a big bottle of water hanging around and managed to cook an egg and some rice on top of the woodburner.

I think you are doing brilliantly and get to enjoy your new kitchen very very soon

just spoke to the kitchen fitter to confirm monday and he's coming at 8 to start, hurray!

its actually good to hear other peoples stories about going through similar with their houses, helps me to focus on what's to look forward to at the other end

Before the days of microwaves my mum managed for months and months with a camping stove, it had a grill and two burners. We moved house and mum had a gas cooker the flat only had electric and no money to buy new cooker.

cece · 25/11/2006 23:46

6 months

We have been without our cooker for 2 weeks but had our new one delivered today. We have lived off of microwaved, George Foreman grilled and rice cookered food.... The oven chips we had tonight were heaven

WestCountryLass · 26/11/2006 18:15

I could probably only manage a week before getting truely cheesed off. THat is how long we manage camping and any longer than that would be hard for me.

We did 6 months - during which time I gave birth to dd (although not in the building site of my house), and visiting midwives were pretty horrified about my lack of kitchen. Had a kettle, microwave, and shelf of food/pans in one corner of a reception room. Fridge was in another corner. Eventually got a belling plug-in cooker.
Worst bit wasn't preparing meals but, since our house is open-plan I never felt I could invite anyone round, especially if they had young children. Too messy, dusty and dangerous.
We are just finishing the last un-touched room in our house, and then we are putting it up for sale in Jan - dh has got a job 60 miles away so we can't stay

well, its been a long week, but its getting there. finally have a working sink again today, 5 days without is about as long as i can take. came downstairs last night wih a bowl of water for washing up, slipped and tipped most of it down myself. cooker is in but not connected up but that should be done later.

i might even post a pic of new kitchen, i know how mnetters like to be nosey
