I don't know if I've spent a reasonable or an insane amount and just want to see what the norm is..?

We had DS 2nd birthday last week and I planned to spend £20. However, Dp had other ideas, and by the time I made him take back the quad bike and accessories he had spent £45. So we went to Toyrsus and brought him a trike and a couple of bits for about that price. I think we will be buying practical gifts for DS - no toys but clothes and things he actually needs.

Usually between £50 and £70.

£30-£40 on main pressie, less if main pressie costs less. The rest on bits and bobs for stocking fillers which all mount up (book, choccies, novelty toy, puzzle and/or clothing).

Bibiboo i think the amount you have spent is fine.

I was planning to buy my 2 yr old a kitchen and accessories fir it but lost my money in farepak so will be little things for her and the baby(4 months).

But i also have 2 boys who are 11 and 15.I have found that the older they get the more money i have to spend. My eldest was in need of a guitar so we have spent 350 quid on that.Saving like mad to but pressies for ds2 and the dd's.

Bibiboo · 17/11/2006 22:36

algach, sorry to hear you were one of the people who lost out with Farepak that's crappy. We do a savings club in work which more than covers dd's presents, and th rest will be paid for, with a little belt tightening, from the joint account.

Only having 1 child helps, I've no doubt we couldn't match this for another child as well. I do worry about the "how to top it next year" syndrome. A colleague bought her ds a 14ft trampoline for his 3rd birthday and then a motorised jeep contraption and a Nintendo ds for Christmas the same year. He's 4 soon, how are they going to top that?

agalch, so sorry you lost your money. i was so angry when i saw that on the news last night and they interviewed kids who were crying

hope you still manage to cope with demands of the kids presents and enjoy yourselves

3andnomore · 17/11/2006 22:54

at the mo £50 each for each of them ds are 10, 4 and 2 years old! We can't afford more, and that is that....

Darciesmum · 18/11/2006 19:08

my DD will be 21mths at xmas, and i've spent £270 on clothes and £30 on dvds and will be buying her a in car dvd player up to £100.

we have lots of family so will be spoilt when it comes to toys so i have no need to buy any.

I know its a lot but until recently been single so saved hard to give her some nice things.
and my DP family will spoil her to!

earlysbird · 18/11/2006 19:26

blimey I don't think I spend £270 on clothes over a whole year, on both my DTs together!!!!!

CountTo10 · 18/11/2006 19:30

By the time I finish his stocking, we will have spent £100. We haven't done a big present just a variety of smaller items, books, clothes, toys etc. We have done his shopping through the year rather than in one hit so it hasn't felt like a huge amount. We don't go any further than that as he gets so much stuff from family, friends etc that we;ve been quite strict this year. Last year he had too much and was so overwhelmed by it all.

CountTo10 · 18/11/2006 19:31

Plus - we only buy presents at birthday and xmas. The only other time he has other things bought for him (other than clothes) is on the very rare occasion that we decide to treat him in that way, and its usually a book or I pick something up in a charity shop, so xmas is the only time of the year we really get to spoil him.

chocolateshoes · 18/11/2006 19:55

My DS will be 18mths & I was thinking of spending about £20!!!! He'll get loads of stuff from the rest of the family & he won't be aware of what the big deal is anyway. I'd rather buy him things throughout the year as he needs them than overwhelm him in one go.
