Any dentists out there know about root canal costs?!!

Hi - my DH just been quoted £600 to have one root canal done (referred by Boots dentist to root canal specialist). I think this is such a lot of money but they are saying it will take 2 sessions and will be done by a specialist who will drill out existing root canal to make it good etc etc. Anyone know anything about this? THANKS

Sounds about right, but why not find a good nhs dentist to do it for a whole lot less. I've got a great one in london. ...

I had private root canal work done in central London and it cost me £78. That was to drill out the root and fill then temporary filling and then cap. I think £600 is outrageous!

So do I...but the dentist says it's a specialist treatment and has referred him to a 'specialist' in root canal work, the thing is he needs to have 2 teeth done so if he goes ahead with this treatment it will be £1200 - IT'S MADNESS! I might phone the dentist up myself and ask why its so much, you know what men are like, they can't sort out a p* up in a brewery...

300ish

If he is having a previous root canal treatment redone this is why he is seeing a specialist hence the price.

I'm sorry but you lot must be bonkers paying privately for dentistry. It doesn't mean the dentistry is any better it just means your dentist earns a fortune.

I worked in NHS dentistry for 7 years, we also offered private treatment the only difference was that the gold content in crowns (caps) was slightly higher and that you could do white fillings in back teeth.

£600 for an hours work, fanbloomintastic! Please don't be conned by these people.

Things may have changed since I left the NHS but there was no reason why you couldn't have root canal treatment done again.

The first difficulty is removing the gutta percha (pinky rubbery points used to fill the roots). Also some molars have 4 root canals and if the dentist only finds and cleans 3 you will still have a problem.

That's great secondhandrose but I asked to go the nhs route, my initial consultation took a months and I was told that the wait on the nhs would be at least 6 months and I would have lost the tooth anyway in that time.
I dont have the money to have it done privately and as I type I have toothache. I will have no choice but to go to my dentist next week to see about having it removed as I can still get it free as baby under 1.
If I'd paid the money I'd have been seen straightaway.

My husband went to Boots 2 years ago and paid a fortune. He only ever goes to the Dentist when it is an absolute emergency and ends up going to wherever he can get an emergency appointment. The dentist Boots referred him to for his specialist treatment was also a lot more than my dentist charges. Maybe your husband could shop around a bit. As regards going to an NHS dentist, the problem is finding one. We have none in our area - they've all gone private!

Girls, really honestly sorry to hear this. I suggest you get your phone books out and start ringing and asking if they accept new NHS patients. Where are you? I know my dentist in Ware, Herts accepts NHS patients.

My dh had a tooth pulled a few years ago as we couldn't afford anything more at the time. We are now getting working family tax credit (or whatever it's called)which entitles you to free nhs dental care, and we have a great nhs dentist, so he just recently had a bridge put in which he's very happy with. Glad we waited so he didn't have to pay.
