Taking baby steps with FLY lady!

Here's a thread for anyone trying to get their house a bit cleaner the FLY lady way. I've had a look at her website now and, well, I've decided to give it a go, despite the bath flooding disaster while I was trying to sign up! I like the sound of doing things in baby steps but so far I must conclude that I haven't even learned to walk yet...

She dictates three first steps for novice cleaners' first day on the road to organisation:

  1. Get completely dressed including shoes
  2. Make your bed
  3. Shine your kitchen sink

Well, I manage the first, though I can't find a hairbrush AND spend 15 minutes searching for my right shoe. My muttered curses whilst I look for it wakes up one of my boys about half an hour earlier than usual. He says "What's the matter Mum?" I reply "I can't find my shoe." He asks "Where are you going?" I reply "Nowhere. I am getting merely getting completely dressed, including my shoes, if I can find them." He looks confused and says he needs a poo and he can't find his potty.
I decide to skip making the bed since my partner is still in it.
So straight on to shining the sink... except I can't find it... there seems to be a washing up mountain the size of Gibraltar where it should be. I start to wash some wine glasses and break two. Crash. Curse. "What does *#@£$$ mean, Mum?" asks my boy. "Oh nothing," I reply, weakly.
My other boy wakes up. He says "MummyMa, why are you washin? up? I want Cocopops and where is my Captain Scarlett car?"

Demented, I have the emails set up to arrive once a day, in a daily digest, straight into a sub folder - otherwise yes, those emails would have driven me over a cliff.

I haven't looked into this flylady business but she sounds like a bit of a madwoman to me...I don't think there is room in my house for another of those (the other one being me of course )

I have only one thing to add, not wanting to burst your bright shiny (soap)bubbles, but I did hear something recently saying that you should not wear shoes in the house, or if you do they should be ones you only wear inside and that you never wear outdoors. Why? Well because when you walk around on the road/grass/path/shop-floor etc, your shoes pick up all sorts of dirt, germs and chemicals, including cleaning agents and pesticides. And if you wear your shoes inside you will track them all thru your house! (And if you have a crawling baby it is even worse as they are down amongst it!) It really made me think twice about wearing my shoes inside anyway!!!

Sorry! (But I hope your sinks look sparkly today!)

I admit defeat! I've unsubscribed. I think I've had 20 emails today!

Ok, I can see why it's a good idea to be ready for action for those sudden garbage moments, but why not keep an old pair of mules, clogs, slip on sandals etc by the front and back doors? Don't lots of people do this anyway?
I have a pair ready and waiting at each door. I just slip my feet into them whenever I have to go outside in a hurry. I go barefoot in the house, so no mess trailed in.

Flylady sounds way too scary for me. All that time spent wading through her emails could be better used doing houework or reading mumsnet
