Am I supposed to be feeling sorry for Irenie? Am I being callous? I don't feel in the slightest bit sorry for her! When Persinny(sp?)died I was upset but she seems such a cold, calculating cow that I have no sympathy for her. R

I'm afraid I decamped to the other side (largely due to dp's moaning - he hates the Forsyte Saga) & watched Auf Wiedesehen, Pet. Wish I'd stuck with it now if only to hear Holly's accent! Have just finished re-reading the first three books & may have to watch it next week to see where they're going to leave the story.
Sobernow - V. intrigued by your attraction to Soames. Is it the money/power thing or the bad-men-are-fanciable thing? (Speaking as someone who likes Spike from Buffy)

Tillysmummy · 30/04/2002 10:43

Bettys I like Spike too. Sobernow I think it's the money thing definitely. Although must say I can't share your fascination - I find him wimpy and not at all fanciable.
But do quite like Wesley as well as Angel in Angel. Am I alone here ?!?!

bettys · 30/04/2002 10:48

Oh Wesley's far too good - the type who forever suffers from unrequited love. I rather like Holtz (sp?) although he's not strictly fanciable.

Tillysmummy · 30/04/2002 10:51

Wasn't buffy weird last week ? And Angel is so sad at the moment. Must admit the Fred and Gun things really starting to get on my tits !

if you like him as soames, you'd love damian lewis as major winters in "band of brothers" - he's practically a superhero!

ps - have bought vol 1 today so can read up and find out what all the fuss is about!

bea · 30/04/2002 14:56

sobernow! - i know what you mean about Bill Bailey... i suppose it's because he's very witty... Manny being such a lovely sad bloke in Black Books... and he does great impressions of billy bragg! ( i love him too! - the passion and conviction of his beliefs! )

Marina · 30/04/2002 15:42

sobernow, clearly a woman of rare discernment. Three of my very favourite men too...especially Bill Bailey, I think he is absolutely gorgeous and talented.
Bossykate is right about Band of Brothers, it was like having Damian (and a lot of noise and gore, alas) in your sitting room every Friday night. As far as I know it's not on video, so look out for a repeat.

Binker · 30/04/2002 18:13

I wanted to say that I am very partial to Rupert Graves (young Jolyon),though once he grew that horrid beard and looked all Bloomsburyish it put me off him. I like to think of him as Freddy in A Room with a View....

tiktok · 30/04/2002 20:02

And thank goodness he has now been allowed to ditch the bouffant wiggy thing he wore on he front of his head...did the poor man no favours at all : (

Rhiannon · 30/04/2002 21:20

What did Irene mean by saying "I am one of them" about the prostitutes she helps. Did she mean she is one too or was it a figure of speech?

Where did Holly's brother disappear to for the entire episode and then just reappear again, was he on said painting trip?

Poor old Soames, a rich London solicitor still not managed to divorce his wife after 5 years and find a pretty young filly to give him the son he craves, and is still chasing Irene (trailer for next week!). R

I missed a bit on Sunday when the phone rang. What happened to young Jolyon's wife? Has she died?

bettys · 01/05/2002 10:23

I think Irene saying "I am one of them" was a figure of speech (perhaps as she never loved Soames) as one of the problems Soames has in trying to divorce her is that she has remained chaste & Soames can get no proof of infidelity. Yet.....

Well, she married Soames to get herself and her stepmother out of looming penury, and many women at the time did indeed "sell" themselves to their husbands in that way. Paid-for sex, just like a prostitute.

I'm at work otherwise I'd check on Irene's words right now! But in the book she does help prostitutes, partly because on the night she ran away from Soames one took her in and looked after her. There's never any suggestion she was actually one too.

ks, I've got the same edition. You're right, Irene doesn't say the the words from the TV script, but she describes how she didn't care whether she lived or died, & that it was hearing the story of the prostitute who took care of her that made her realise there were women worse off than she was. Scriptwriters' artistic licence again.
I think Jolyon was wondering if she was on the breadline & starving. He goes on to order her two dozen bottles of Burgundy on his way home, as she "must want picking-up sometimes"!
Don't we all!

Fionn · 03/05/2002 13:35

Have just watched last week's FS on tape. Fantastic! I was in tears several times. Corin Redgrave should get a BAFTA. I agree that Irene was better in this episode. I presume Holly's brother was packed off to boarding school and just came back for his grandfather's funeral.

Tinkerbell · 03/05/2002 14:21

Sooo agree about Corin Redgrave. I sobbed when he died.

Oh, and, Binker, Freddy from Room with a View...we are so on the same wavelength. Been in love with him ever since!!
