the car seats which were in my car at the time of the crash (with my dd's sitting in them) are cluttering my hallway. i need to get rid of them. i would just put them out with the rubbish but am worried that someone will nab them and obviously after being in a crash they arent safe anymore. the tip is ages away, and i'm not sure if they go in the dumpsters or if they go by the side (some pople go thro the stuff and can buy things there). where do u get rid of car seats without someone else getting hold of them?

put them in the rubbish with a note on them?

SoupDragon · 04/05/2004 20:48

Slit the straps on them. They're not worth salvaging then. You could also remove/slit the fabric covering and paint "crash damaged" on them. You might have to take them to the dump though.

I'm thinking if someone reads the note and nabs them anyway, that would suggest a child somewhere will use that car seat instead of nothing. Even crash-worn seats are better than nothing surely?

[and to stop unscrupulous types from reselling them, write "BEEN IN CRASH" on the back in indelible marker pen]

well if i dont nab the bin men or the council household rubbish collectors by thursday then we will have to take them down the dump. might nab the pretty pink cover off dd1 booster seat, it'll come in handy when dd2 has a sick spree in the car. i'll remove the straps from the big car seat, good idea.

SP, sorry, but a seat in thats been in a crash is weakened, and the metal/plastic may buckle or snap, causing a lot of damage, sometimes more than if a child isnt in a seat (so i read somewhere). The accident we had wasnt a major one, but the jolt we recieved was huge (32tonne LGV went into us), so i feel that the seats arent safe for my kids, so they arent safe for anyone elses kids.

I don't know about the UK, but in the states, we were advised that if the carseat was in a crash, we should take it to the closest place that did carseat education (the highway patrol, police, or fire station), and they would either dispose of it safely or use it for demonstration purposes.

well i placed the booster seat in a black bag with loads of other rubbish, so hopfully it will go tomorrow with the rubbish. the large seat i grabbed the council refuse collectors and they lobbed it in there truck to dispose of.
