Did you like MMM Coddy? Am currently re-reading it to ds2 (5 on Saturday), and can't believe how much he adores the stories ... and what a calming bedtime influence they have.

Dick King-Smith: Sophie stories spring to mind.

Will have a look on the shelf, and return with more ideas in a mo.

Not that we've tried these but... Roald Dahl, Narnia or even in a whisper{} Enid Blyton runs away quickly{}

Codswallop · 04/05/2004 19:58

I loved mmm as a kid and am suprised that my very masculine ds loves them

liz 0 I would try them I think

Flat Stanley!! Is it still available? My Mum still has our 35 yr old copy!

Hmm maybe too many pics? Great book though

pollyanna · 04/05/2004 20:02

I would suggest Dahl - my ds (5.4) loves giraffe pelly and me, charlie and the chocolate factory etc. we tried fantastic mr fox and had to tone it down a bit. He also really likes the classic fairy tales (we pretend we are reading them for his sister!) and any books to do with pirates/knights/robin hood. also
Flat Stanley - but that is a bit odd.

Codswallop · 04/05/2004 20:02

Flat Stanley is about a boy who is flattened by a heavy picture, i think, falling on him. He mails himself to his friend, as far as I can remember!

pollyanna · 04/05/2004 20:05

Tissy - didn't see your post before I posted! I really liked Flat Stanley when I was a child and ds likes it too.

Yes, I had forgotten how gruesome fantastic mr fox was, we had to miss out bits!

Codswallop · 04/05/2004 20:07

I recently bought (second hand) a couple of "Little Nose" books (anyone remember him from Jackanory?) and read them to dd (7) and ds (5). Ds really enjoyed them. Littlenose has a pet mammoth and goes hunting, lots of boys stuff.

Tissy · 04/05/2004 20:09

Looks like it would be suitable.

Codswallop · 04/05/2004 20:09

Yes, chaptery, and it looks as though there are a couple of sequels I didn't know about. The liknk is to an old edition, but Amazon do a newer edition too.

mummysurfer · 04/05/2004 20:12

Dorothy Edwards: My naughty little sister (and sequels)
(cross between Horrid Henry and Milly Molly Mandy!)

Ursula Moray Williams: Gobbolino the Witch's cat

Andrew Wakefield: Bottersnikes and Gumbles (though it's out of print, and difficult to get hold of)

Jill Murphy: The worst witch (and sequels)

A lot of this stuff is fairly twee and dated ... but much current writing for, say, read alone 7-10 yr olds, is just so totally in appropriate for 5 yr olds to listen to. Definitely a gap in the market ... maybe some mumsnet aspiring writers could oblige.

Dick King-Smith: Sophie's Snail (and sequels)
There are loads of great DKS stories, but my boys didn't particularly enjoy the ones that really major on the animals, with the exception of: Dragon Boy and the cuckoo child

Codswallop · 04/05/2004 20:35

thnaks s much R

I had my niaghty little sister asa kid - is that the one where they bang on the wall wit a broom?
