Does anyone feed their garden birds?

Just sat watching the teeny baby blue tits being brought to the feeders by their very frazzled looking Mum and Dad.

A coal tit is diving in when he gets a chance, and the starlings are amassing in the hedge for a raid. The starling babies are still asking their parents for food, but the parents seem to be hinting that it's time the babies were supporting themselves.

We have Robins (my favourite)

House sparrows (tons of them)

Dunnocks

Blackbirds

Starlings

blue, great, coal and long tail tits

wrens

Goldfinches (seen in the garden, but never on the feeders, they ignore the nyger seed bought just for them)

And the big guys - Jackdaw, Magpie and Wood pigeon.

I could sit and watch them for hours (and I do).

My goldfinches ate me out of house this year.

Hope they will be back next year again.

bruffin · 01/08/2015 19:54

Actually the squirrels are a menace and do pinch the food. They unscrew the seed hanger and have been seen running off with whole fat balls.
DH greased the pole, but didnt stop them its now covered in squirrel fur.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 01/08/2015 19:59

Here are the wrens who nested in our box three years ago...

The parent coming to collect mealworms (would come right up to you to do this).

The nestlings in the box.

The fledglings in their first couple of days exploring the garden before they could fly.

I love Wrens crabby
Dh took the nesting box off the tree one year and left it on the table next to back door. One day i noticed tits swooping past the door. Great tits hsd nested in the box. They wernt bothered by us at all and i think there was 7 babies in all

CrabbyTheCrabster · 01/08/2015 20:06

And from the place we lived before this...

The robin who would come in through the patio doors and sit on the dining room table to eat his mealworms.

The female blackbird who would come to within 3 feet of me to load up with mealworms for her babies.

Smile

I missed them so much when I moved!

We have lots of different birds including wood peckers etc. We also have partridges (we sprinkle bird seed and nuts on the ground) and pheasants.

We have house martins too but they shit everywhere!

Unfortunately we also have magpies who pursue all the other birds.

VulcanWoman · 01/08/2015 20:11

We've had one lot of blue tits, was lovely to watch, mum and dad work so hard! I put food out in winter.

Dunnakos · 01/08/2015 20:22

Since my OP, I can add chaffinch, goldcrest and nuthatch to my list making 17 species.

proud

I have invested in binoculars - it's amazing to feel so close to the birds - and a bird book.

Yes, not in the UK and have a couple of hummingbird feeders, they are amazing to watch. Also have a lot of Kisadee's, and some that I don't know the English name for, locals call it Coleirinha, it's a type of finch, we have some beautiful orange/yellow saffron finches as well and various other ones that are black or brown. We are lucky and have quite a few blue fronted amazon parrots (which are beautiful). Also have blackbirds Grin.

redbinneo · 01/08/2015 20:29

Bird food goes out every morning, first attackers are the gulls followed rapidly by the magpies. Small birds and blackbirds come and go throughout the day.

mummylin2495 · 01/08/2015 20:31

Yes we do, we love to watch them. We have two big trees and they all seem to congregate in there we have the following

Blue tits
Robins
Magpies.
Sparrows
Collared doves
Blackbirds
Pigeons
Starlings ( which is the first time they have been in our garden and there are loads of them who can empty a container between them )
Dh has a " pet " pigeon called Phillip Grin
We would love to have different and colourful birds to watch.

Samcro · 01/08/2015 20:38

I love feeding them, we had masses of starlings a while back

Earlybird · 01/08/2015 20:38

Used to, and would love to again, but seem to attract as many squirrels as birds. Am happy to feed the birds - and love watching them. But, not happy about the squirrels. Was told to stop using sunflower seeds and/or a mixture that includes them, and change to safflower seeds. But I still am over-run by squirrels.

Pointlessfan · 01/08/2015 20:43

What a lovely thread. We get:
Robins
Blackbirds
Sparrows
Starlings
Blue/Great/Coal tits
Bullfinches
Goldfinches
Wrens
I've seen an occasional nuthatch and today, for the first time ever, a green finch.
Also wood pigeons and magpies.

VulcanWoman · 01/08/2015 20:46

Tomato, jealous of your Hummingbirds, how lovely for you, unfortunately I only have ornaments and wall stickers though, saw a wild one in Cuba when on holiday. Can I ask which Hummingbirds visit your feeders and do you have to make your own liquid feed up or buy it. I think all Hummingbirds are amazing but what about the bee hummingbird! Smallest bird in the world.

tomatodizzymum · 01/08/2015 21:12

Sometimes we buy it and sometimes we make it. We have quite a lot of hummingbird attractive plants and trees as well. I'm not sure about the types, we did have a really really tiny one the other day I will start making a note of their colours and looking them up online. I keep meaning to get some photos of them and they really are amazing. They are called flower-kissers in Portuguese.

VulcanWoman · 01/08/2015 21:24

Flower kisses, that's a very apt name for them.
Looks like the bee hummingbird is only found in the Cuban Archipelago.

EugenesAxe · 01/08/2015 21:28

I channel chemenger in feeling like our birds' dealer. We are lucky to live in a place with lots of good birds. I regularly see blue, coal and great tits, greater spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches and the more mundane ones. We also have a family of green woodpeckers that visit occasionally (one good thing about having ants), and occasional greenfinches, goldfinches, bullfinches and chaffinches. I've seen a tree creeper once. Jay, pigeon and magpie families are in the area.

CrazyOldBagLady · 01/08/2015 21:51

We get birds taking feed all day long. The sparrows and blackbirds are still feeding fledglings at the moment. We get a lot of starlings too, but they have cleared off since we haven't bought any mealworms for a while.

We get lots of tits, finches, dunnocks, sparrows. We have a resident pair of robins, tons of sparrows, starlings, pigeons and doves, thrush and wren. Occasionally see a jay or a woodpecker. Sometimes we see birds of prey, they go so fast that I never get to see their markings properly to identify them.

One winter we had a grey wagtail that would come every day and smack its head repeatedly against the patio doors. It never came back last winter.

We also get hedgehogs, squirrels and bats.

For good value feed in larger quantities I use thecornmill.com and store the feed in plastic stacking boxes. I feed all year round, as they seem to take it. Usually seed, peanuts and mealworms plus household scraps.

We do the RSPC birdwatch each year too.

Pointlessfan · 01/08/2015 22:31

A friend and who lives round the corner noticed that she and I get completely different birds on our feeders. As we live so close the only reason I can think of is trees - she has a large oak we have a hawthorn and conifers. Does that seem likely?

bruffin · 01/08/2015 22:39

I have an oak , two scotch pines and a large hawthorn and dont get any finches other than the odd chaffinch. Also surrounded by lots of large oaks.

Pointlessfan · 02/08/2015 06:29

My friend has oak and she doesn't get finch's either. She does get woodpeckers though but we don't.

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/08/2015 06:35

We have a feeder with seeds in.

We get

Blackbirds
Robins
Starlings
Blue tits

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/08/2015 06:42

VulcanWoman the biggest buzz of my life was seeing a real live hummingbird in my uncle's garden in California! Grin

Pointlessfan · 02/08/2015 06:43

Finches not finch's Blush
