Bank have credited me with £1000 IN ERROR!

Have been a bit bemused by my bank balance recently, been cutting down trying to save for my maternity fund but even so, I couldn't believe me giving up booze would mount up so much. Got a statement last week and on one day, dh paid in some cash and underneath, with the same paying in code thing, was a deposit for £1000! He didn't put it in!

This happened about 3 weeks ago, when will they notice? Or will they not? Will they demand it back in one lump - we have been toying with getting some work done on the house with it.

I'd tell them. They're bound to trace it eventually. Sorry

Branster · 04/05/2004 14:21

having worked for a bank myself, i would say they would notice sooner rather later and they would simply withdraw the amount in full, might even send you a letter about it. i don't know what the standard practice is for all banks, but the person who 'lost' their £1000 will kick up a fuss when they notice - after all the money belonged to someone and they just made an error when putting in the details. I would say it's best to phone your bank, let them know what happened and let them get it sort it. if you spend it and they're not your money, they'll want them back anyway. good luck!

marthamoo · 04/05/2004 14:21

I think I would too. Couldn't sleep at night if I spent it unless I had easily enough to pay it back in one lump sum if they suddenly demanded it back. I don't (have enough) so I wouldn't (spend it)!

Branster · 04/05/2004 14:22

if it's the banks' money, i would think they'd want all the money back in full. sorry.

Lisa78 · 04/05/2004 14:23

Oliveoil, the bank is bound to notice sooner or later! Why don't you just leave it where it is - perhaps you can get a few pence interest before they take it back!
For goodness sake, don't spend it!

Pacific · 04/05/2004 14:29

This has happened to me TWICE! Once for £5000, next time for £1500. Don't spend it!! Both times the bank simply took it back before the letter informing me of the error reached me. Nor will you get to keep the interest so probably best inform the bank about it.

Seem to remember a court case recently.

Woman involved notified the bank, who confirmed it was her money, so she spent it (and why not). The bank went back and tried to recoup the money - I believe they lost the case.

Moral - make sure you notify them be for spending

Here's my twopenith - They never did find it But after a few months I did ring them and tell them and they still had no idea what I was going on about. Also a real cufufall (sp?) as they wanted it all in writing etc.etc. I then asked them about compensation for my time and phonecalls, stamps and the like and they said they'd stump up £10 (wow!), which, guess what? never appeared, however they took the £30K back very quickly I've still got the few months worth of bank statements though!

misdee · 04/05/2004 18:27

i went to the bank and made a deposisit of 50quid, the lady got all confused and put my account number in as a deposit so for a few moments i had 86million quid going in my account. shame she never actually credited it fully as it never appeared on any statements. she just said oops, explained what she did then corrected it. darn

oops. sorry.

When we sold our last house, the lawyer's secretary creditted our account TWICE instead of once for £180,000. He was on holiday and she was freaking out! I made lots of jokes about the carribbean being really nice at that time of year. Poor thing. I don't think she really got the humor of it.

JJ · 04/05/2004 22:36

Whatever happened to "it's wrong, you know it's not yours"?

Sheesh.

JJ · 04/05/2004 22:38

oops, not in reference to you, SofiaAmes.

I'd still leave it where it is and say nothing, just in case they didn't notice. Wouldn't go out of my way to help them. Its their mistake - let them sort it out - or not!
