Its 11.11.11 and i will be remembering the stories my nana told me of her brother in WW2, please feel free to add your story too

My great Uncle James saw it all when fighting in WW2, he was so hungry one day that he swapped his gold watch bought by my great gran for 2 pieces of stale bread, and at the end of the war, the soldier from England actually gave him his watch back

My father was hiding under the kitchen table in his grandmothers house with his cousin when a bomb hit a house up the street from them. Blew in all the windows of my great grans house. All dads cousing could say was 'What will gran say about the windows'

During Gulf war 2 dh had to go to the town dump to get planks of wood to shore up his camp bed. His plane casts £100 million, but they couldn't get them beds to sleep on.

There was a similar thread yesterday, but am happy to add my story. My maternal grandmother was in the french resistance during the war and hid many downed airmen and smuggled them to the coast to boats across the channel. One of the airmen invited her to england after the war. She thankfully survived the war (not all her family did) and went to england where she met and married the younger brother of that airman.

my mil was shot at in hampstead heath, she was only about 12 and was very upset as she mucked up her new coat when they had to throw themselves on the ground. after one bad night they also found an arm on the roof and a shell on the dressing table. my mum and dad were both from west london so were exacuated
