help needed with a door handle

Very dull but can anyone advise as to how to deal with a very old door with a very old door knob that has got stuck shut due to the thread in the handle snapping?

It is DD's room - she is mightily upset about it.

The door knob is still in order on the inside of the room but that's about as much use as chocolate teapot right now.

we have been pondering what to do for days. Can't turn the knob with pliers from this side as it is too stiff and can't get a good enough grip. Sorry if this is all too double entendre-some for some.

Can't get in the window due to location and of said window and height of the sill from the ground.

Help please, somebody?

DD is not in the room btw!

slide a credit card (or non-important other type of card) down the side?

Can you unscrew the facer plate, take off the knobs & turn the "spike" with pliers?

Any chance you can undo the screws in the hinges and get it off that way? Otherwise, prob. time to get a man in.

Thanks Popsycal.

Do you know the 'technique' for this and will it work on a very cumbersome old latch that goes sort of into the wood frame, i.e. not a Yale type of thing that goes into the metal catch screwed onto the surface on the other side

Ooh, Ikbloo, that may indeed be possible...off to check.

Mumblechum, the hinges are only accessible from the other side, typically.

One of the problems has been the elderly nature of the door. Tried brute force but quickly realised we might bring half the house down too. Also nearly all of the damn thing is covered in about 20 layers of paint so not much room for manoeuvre.

It is in a very ancient Charentiase house and we really don't want to have to smash the thing in, although it is tempting in frustrated moments.

it is possible if you remove the current door fixings to buy a longer version of the metal bit that connects the two handles, iyswim. then you will be able to get purchase on it and turn it.
