Change babies nappies..
Change bedding...
Change bathroom towels...

After a recent discussion about housework at our toddlergroup I left feeling really slovenly and as if my house is dirty and my baby is being mistreated. It can be a bit snobby there so want to know if they are typical housewives or whether they are fibbing/OTT.
Most mums there reckon they change their babies nappies about 8-10 times a day ( I only do this about 5 times...always immediately if she is smelly and she never has had nappy rash, only occasionally a bit red)
It was bantered around that they change bedding 2 or 3 times a week...I only do this every Friday, babies cot sheets every day (big dribbler so arre soaking wet by morning)
They change towels after every bath or shower and one went on about how the idea of using a damp towel or one that had already been used and "left to fester" was disgusting...oops.
Come on - be honest, how often do you do these type of things and am I a slob?Should I buck my ideas up. I don?t want sympathy or niceness here - I just want a bit of honesty!!
(sorry long post..again)

They obviously are all very very rich and live in hotels and have lots of nannies and don't work. 10 times a day...as if.

Nappies - ds was 3 -4 in a 24 hr period (as he never got nappy rash and pooed regularly); dd is 4-5 as she gets nappy rash and usually only poo's in a clean nappy...always change immediately after a poo.
Bedding - once a week, though pre-children it was once a week for the bottom sheet and once a fortnight for the duvet cover.
Bathroom towels - once a week or when they small whichever is sooner.

Angeliz · 02/05/2004 00:17

Nappies, i'm saddened to say i don't remember,(dd is three), but definately when they stank

Bedding, dd every few days as she is being night trained and has a few accidents. Ours,......every few weeks i guess!!

Towels, i do tend to chuck in the washing. In the winter i hang them on the radiators, but in the summer when i'm too lazy to put them out to dry, it's easier to stick them in the wash!
(BUT, i have been known to let them fester in a corner as a few weeks ago dp asked what the smell was in the bathroom and it was an old flannel that had jumped behind the sink)

Levanna · 02/05/2004 00:49

No nappies now (few months reprieve before the next round starts!)
Bedding weekly, more including 'accidents'.
Towels after every use........
this might lead you to mistakenly think I wash towels daily - I don't, I just have a lot of towels , they all fester away happily in the basket 'till I get around to them!
(Washing up - as rarely as possibly, hoovering - when the carpet looks grey and there are dust bunnies running around, dusting - urrrm, polishing - never, bathroom - when it's embarassing (or MIL is due 'round ), ironing - can't remember how!)
i.e. I think the people at the group picked out their good points, bet they're realy slovenly about the things they neglected to mention .

When DS was a baby I changed his nappy when Aunty Gina said I should
DD has a nappy change usually after a feed ... so 5 times a day? Maybe 6 if she does the big b/f overflow poos ... which happens about once a day.
Bedlinen ... when I can be ar$ed (not very often)
Baby's cot lined ... new muslin under her head every day .. the rest probably about once a week.
Towels ... every few days when they get too damp - Auckland notorious for damp atmosphere so towels don't dry very well ...

Nappies - when soaked or poo-ed. We use washables so we are probably more at the 8-10 end. I certainly wouldn't use 10 "instant" nappies - think of the cost!
Towels - every few days, but saved up into a large load and then all boiled up (ds has eczema)ds's towels every 36 hours.
Sheets - oh god, when it's a nice day and I don't have anything more pressing to do. Once a week in summer then, and maybe 3 weeks in winter. Cot sheets and grobag twice a week, used to be daily.

Thanks to all of you for your honesty - some great answers, made me laugh and feel like just perhaps I was about average on this one. Feel like printing this thread out, photocopying it and making a few hand outs for the next Toddler Group session
What is it about a bunch of women getting together and talking about their daily routines that can bring out this pointless competative streak? It reminds me of that wife swap series. Rather than being an interesting insight into different family set ups and routines, it became a show where women slagged off other women in some kind of bid to look like superwoman. (Mind you, got to question the sanity of any woman wanting to go on a show like that in the first place.)
Thank God for mumsnet where you can find a bit of realism now and again

Change babies nappies... DD is now 2yo and being potty trained; before that 4 or 5 times a day (including night), when tiny maybe 5 or 6

Change bedding... fortnightly I suppose; DD's sometimes more often as she gets quite sweaty and the white sheets mark

Change bathroom towels... weekly, or when looking grubby, or I remember too

And for stace:
Me and DH shower every day; bath less than once a month! 2yo DD has bath most evenings as part of her winding down ritual. Sometimes miss it if late or busy - doesn't harm her

tallulah · 02/05/2004 10:37

Makes me laugh- everyone is obsessed with the environment- we must recycle, we mustn't use cars or planes, must use "real" nappies... yet the biggest threat to the environment in the South East at least is wasting water!! The people where I used to work had a shower every morning & a bath EVERY night (5 people in family) & washed their towels on a hot wash every day... how much water must that use?

When we moved to this house it had a water meter & we were worried ou bills would rocket. Not so- ours went right down, because the previous house was based on rateable value.. basically we'd been paying for the water for other people to waste.

We all wash (properly) every day, & probably bath once a week (hair wash more often- every other day?). Usually my water is still hot when I get out, so one of the boys will get in after me, as long as I haven't shaved in there. We don't work down the pit, or in heavy industry, so none of us get that dirty... does anyone really need a bath AND a shower EVERY day?

Our bed gets changed once a fortnight- the children's less often (usually because I can't get into their rooms ). My children are never ill & have no allergies, although they were all born with atopic eczema (grown out of) & my DH has hay fever & a penicillin allergy. This can't be coincidence.

MissChief · 02/05/2004 11:13

cats go in our bed.. but do sometimes change it..
BTW, biggest threat is cars by a long LONG way-not only cos of pollution causing sharp rise in asthma etc but accidents, huge increase in obesity, you name it (got serious there

JanZ · 03/05/2004 10:36

Nappies- when ds was younger - were whenever he needed it, ie was stinky or if it had been a long time snce the last stinky one. Probably between 5 and 5 times a day (maybe more when he under 1).

Bedding: ours - bottom sheet weekly, duvet cover and pillow cases once a fortnight. ds' - whenever I remember (not that often!).

Towels: about once a fortnight. The bath towels are white though, so if they look particulary grubby, I'll do them sooner. The handtowels I probably do twice a week - as often as I do a coloured wash. If I had two sets of nice big bath seets, intead of just one, I might do them more often!

WSM · 03/05/2004 11:07

Nappies - At the moment it is every 25-30 minutes as 21mo DD has the trots, but usually around 4 times a day on average.

Bedding - Ours once a week (it's white), and the kids once a fortnight

Towels - Towels are generally used 2 or 3 times before being put in the wash. They are hung neatly to dry in between though, not left festering in a pile on the floor !

I have to confess to ironing the bedding that goes on my bed. We have white sheets and they just look awful creased and I love the feel of crisp clean sheets, worth the effort IMO

WSM · 03/05/2004 11:09

Would like to point out that I am not one of those fruity folk who iron teatowels/socks/pants etc. In fact the bedding is the only thing I'm obsessive about ironing, most of the time my clothes are worn creased to buggery !!!

WSM · 03/05/2004 11:12

Stace -

DH & I shower everyday
We all (5 of us) have a bath everyday too. Kids tend to share water and DH will generally get in mine unless I have shaved etc. so only 2 baths of water, not even that as the kids only have 1/2 full tubs.

Britney · 03/05/2004 11:16

Nappies - about 5 or 6 times a day when pooey or wet
Bedding - ds (7 months)once a week or when sheet snotty / wet from dribble / sicked on; dd (3) once a week; my bed every fortnight
Towels - once a week
