My son of 5 has come down with C Pox today, he is not feeling well and is at the very contagious stage.
I just nipped out for half an hour and my late partner's Witch of a Mother has taken him into the busy town centre for Lunch. Am I over reacting or is she totally oblivious to his welfare and any kids or adults around who haven't had C pox.

I have had a transplant which suppresses the immune system.I caught shingles from a child with c pox and was very ill.It is also dangerous in the elderly. However I would be cross if anyone took my ds out without my knowledge sick or not

Well she is back with the kids now and is really apologetic, which has taken me by surprise!
I think she realises that I am slowly getting stronger.
She stayed here for a while after my partner (her daughter) died. Then she just took off and I was on my own with the three children age 1, 2 and 3 at the time, (and I mean on my own) still in shock and turmoil. Anyway she returned from Scotland and when she next visited here she said that she didn't think I would be able to cope on my own. Again though (sod me) but what about the kids feelings etc with her just going in the middle of the night without saying goodbye, exactly four weeks after their Mother put them to bed and then killed herself!
Do you know what I am trying to say?

My lad has come to me and asked to have a sleep on the sofa. love the little mite to bits.

hi jmg, just read this post of yours/
a) calm down
b) at least thats all three that have (had) it now
c) Your mil was is definetly irresponsible as everyone has said cp is dangerous to preganant women, to the elderly and to the immune suppressed. people who have cp immunity can contract shingles (most often in the elderly and immune suprressed) which can be very painful indeed.

As you know my little one has cp right now too, i had the pregnancy scare 4 weeks ago when my niece had it and had to have my immunity checked and have made the decision to keep my little away from my mil who is 74 as i would not want it on my conscience if you she got ill with cp.

You cannot however be responsible for her actions!!!! or her ignorance. You need to educate her on the risks that she has put others at and give a bloody good telling off for unnecessarily wasting your little ones energy on a trip out.

In the meantime just remember that they've all had it now and so the risks of any of them getting it again are really slim. Chin up and dont go too mad at the witch it'll just get you more stressed than anything

GeorginaA · 01/05/2004 14:28

I'd go ballistic tbh, but then I've just been through an extremely stressful time when I was exposed to chickenpox late in pregnancy (I seem to have escaped, but my nerves are shot to pieces, and I think I pretty much sobbed my heart out in fear every single day of the three weeks).

Yes, chickenpox is generally "only" a problem to the baby early or late pregnancy, but chickenpox in an adult can be serious anyway, let alone during pregnancy, with much higher risks of complications associated with it. (Without sounding melodramatic, and I know this is worse case scenario stuff, but some studies suggest up to 40% of pregnant women who catch chickenpox will get viral pneumonia of which there is an associated mortality rate, although I never could find a study that would definitively state the risks I've seen mortality figures between 5%-25% of those catching viral pneumonia).

IT IS A VERY SERIOUS ILLNESS IN PREGNANT WOMEN AND IF YOU ARE EXPOSED WHILE PREGNANT YOU ARE ADVICED TO CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!

All that said, you have to be extremely unlucky not to already be immune to chickenpox by the time you're pregnant, even if you don't think you've had chickenpox as a child. I still don't think it's worth the risk, and certainly very irresponsible to risk exposing someone to that just because you want to go out to lunch...

Sorry. Am a bit forceful about this subject - probably overly so

wobblyknicks · 01/05/2004 14:30

jmg - glad she's come back - and damn right she should be apologetic!!! She might have her own feelings and opinions but she's obviously not taking yours into consideration and she should be. She needs to realise that what she's doing affects your kids and they come first.

GeorginaA · 01/05/2004 14:31

Oh, btw, as an aside - you can't catch shingles from chickenpox - shingles is when the chickenpox virus (which lives dormant inside you even after you've had it) reactivates. HOWEVER, someone who is not immune from chickenpox can catch it from someone who has shingles.

Hope this helps

coppertop · 01/05/2004 14:33

It sounds as though she WANTED you to 'fail'.

Poor little ds. I would say give him a kiss from all of us but the poor little mite would end up being covered in kisses! I hope he starts to feel a bit better soon.

jmg1 · 01/05/2004 14:33

He has fallen asleep immediately

Hope your ds gets well soon. Just give him one big kiss from all of us

stace · 01/05/2004 14:35

have to say that i have had conflicting advice no the cp-shingles thing and my mil was told by her doctor definetly to stay away from cp as it can activate shingles, either way we all agree that quarantine is the best thing for anyone with cp.

Georgina, how are you feeling now: I followed your thread having had a scare myself but i was fortunate enough to have not need the vaccination.

How are you doing now and did they recheck your immunity?

jmg1 · 01/05/2004 14:38

Re the cp - shingles!
I have not had cp and when my girls had it the week before last our gp surgery said that you cannot get shingles from cp. I have to say our gp surgery is the best I have come across.

jmg hope he has a nice easy mild case and take my advice that i learned last week from all these wonderful mntters, nurofen to reduce the temperature and calpol for the other symptons. I didnt know that and calpol just did not reduce his temperature which peaked at 40.5 keep smiling and big kiss for big boy.

stace · 01/05/2004 14:40

jmg do you know if you are immune, if i was in your circumstance i think i would like to get some protection for myself as quickly as possible. As georgina about the homeopathic varicella, i may be wrong but i think she has done some research and has taken it?

GeorginaA · 01/05/2004 14:40

Feeling okay now - although even though I'm out of the incubation period, I still find myself checking for spots on a regular basis!

No, they haven't checked my immunity - if I get exposed again then they'll check. The VZIG wears off after a period of time, so I'd have to go through the whole rigmarole again on re-exposure.

Still, baby is coming out via induction Monday 10th, so not long to go now

coppertop · 01/05/2004 14:41

Just mis-read that and though jmg was being called "big boy"! That would probably make his day!

wobblyknicks · 01/05/2004 14:42

ct - you never know, stace didn't say who the big kiss was for!!!

jmg1 · 01/05/2004 14:42

ct you are a norty girl
