I like the half hour comedies

I listen to them online when I'm doing the ironing

however the ones I liked aren't on now so if anyone has any suggestions

Trinityrhino · 07/11/2006 20:18

is it called the world today, can't remember it's on at 12 midday ish, I like that and in the morning when I'm driving to school they have some interesting discussion

5 years ago I would never have thought I would be listening to radio 4 but radio 1 can be sooo loud and the music ugh don't get me started

I'm onyl 28 lol

Fauve · 07/11/2006 20:19

I listen to all of it because I work from home. The World at One is excellent, so is Start the Week. The various book programmes are good, too. There are too many repeats, but you do get some goodies. IMO, you'll like it all more as you embrace it.

Spidermama · 07/11/2006 20:19

There are a couple of really good local speech stations in London. How about your local BBC station. What's that like.

I listen to FiveLive with Victoria Derbishire in the mornings (topical chat phone in). I find 4 a bit slow and plodding though I do like Womans Hour and You and Yours. On the Phsychiatrist's Couch can be good too. I'm not sure if that's still on.

Most of them have podcasts and listen again features on their websites so you can choose your listening time.

I love Radio 4 - feel like I learn something every time I listen to it, and it's been over 20 years now!
I think some of the comedy's gone downhill though and listen to Radio 7 for repeats of Radio 4 favourites. Radio 7's good early morning- the Little Toe show - they do Horrid Henry stories and others, which my dd loves. Beats Talk Sport any day!
The News Quiz (has it just finished?)
Sorry I haven't a clue (missing it like mad!), same with Just a Minute
Archers
All the plays when I can(rarely get to listen to them)
Moneybox
Today
PM
Desert Island Discs (so long as the castaway is under 90)
Used to LOVE Home Truths with JP - wasn't the same after he died.
Women's hour when I can
Broadcasting House on a Sunday morning

ilovecaboose · 07/11/2006 20:20

IF you go to bbc.co.uk you can listen again to any of their programmes by going to the radio station site and selecting listen again.

Also if you like news quiz, just a minute bbc7 (DAB station, but can also get it on listen again over internet) often plays these and others such as I'm sorry I haven't a clue (my favourite).

I listen to it in the car, which normally means the 9.00 slot in the morning (Start the Week, Midweek, In Our Time, Desert Island Discs) and the 4.30 slot in the afternoon (some new programme about statistics [yawn emoticon], A Good Read, Thinking Allowed, Material World [double yawn and that Quentin Whatsisname thinks he's soooooo funny... but isn't!].

Also listen to Today/PM when possible. The comedies are great, especially News Quiz, Just a Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Lots of good one-off programmes too.

Would listen to The Archers given half a chance, but am never in the car/near a radio at that time and am not dedicated enough to do 'listen again'.

But basically I just listen to what's on. I have learnt so much from Radio 4...

Spidermama · 07/11/2006 20:25

I agree about acting on the radio. Isn't it awful? And my dh used to be on the radio rep. He agrees too FGS!

There are two things which make me dive to turn the radio channel over as if my life depended on it. One is drama and the other is football.

whizzbangbang · 07/11/2006 20:25

I am a huge Radio 4 fan - I listen to it whenever I can, although I do tend to watch tv at night. Someone once referred to it as the housewifes university and although I hate the term Housewife I do think that if it wasn't for R4 I would have very little idea of what is going on in the world.

The Today Program first thing in the morning is a great way of catching up on news and current affairs - it's great fun to hear the politicians getting a really good grilling. The 'main' interview of the morning is at 8.15

Womans Hours - is fab and not at all WI

I'm sorry I haven't a clue - off air at the mo, but I defy you not to laugh out loud.

The Archers - particularly hot at the moment.

Book at Bedtime - depending on the book

Clive James is doing his memoirs at the mo I caught a bit this morning and enjoyed them.

From Our Own Correspondent - fantastically interesting, more then you'd think.

The Food Programme - always makes me hungry.

Those uniquely R4 programmes on subjects like "The history of breadmaking'

John Humphreys looking for God - three part series interviewing a leading light from Cof E, Muslim and Jewish religions asking them to convert him - really great.

The 6.30 comedy slot is fab

Hate, hate hate the round Britain Quiz and anything with Melvin Bragg.

I listen more to radio 5 now (esp like the afternoon show when they do books, films etc. - think it is with Simon Mayo).

I try radio 4 every now and then but can't help feeling like screaming 'you obnoxious twats' (but perhaps I've been tuning in at the wrong time)

Spidermama · 07/11/2006 20:27

You can get BBC London online or on digital radio. It's a really good listen. (Can you tell I used to work for them )
LBC is good too if a little patchy.

Your local BBC station should be talk based but I know some of them are pretty crap. Might be worth a try though when the drama's on 4.

Spidermama · 07/11/2006 20:28

Eurch! Suddenly I vividly remember cleaning out my cat's ears with a cotton bud.

foxinsocks · 07/11/2006 20:29

and where has your TV gone Pruni?

I have it on all of the time. News in the morning, woman's hour, the plays, world at one, broadcasting house, the programme that's on at 5 everyday, All in the mind? was good too.

The only time I don't listen is on a Saturday evening, when it just all goes wrong!

Listened to a fab programme yesterday about weather stories that have made headlines in 2006 and someone's diary of what's been happening in his garden. I'm really selling it short there, it was great!

I also listen to the Farming programme in the morning
