In praise of a lovely AA man ...

Had such wonderful service from the AA man on Tuesday evening I wanted to share. DH is also going to write to them tomorrow and pass our thanks on.

On Tuesday my lovely NEW Smart ForFour broke down. On getting in to town I noticed my 1sta nd 2nd gears seemedreally "sticky" and it was hard to get into gear. And then at the next roundabout - on main ring road, on busy roundabout at height of rush hour - I lost all my gears entirely. car stalled and that was it. I couldn't get any gears and was therefore stuck.

Phoned Snart assistance and they got the AA out me. They actually gave pretty quickly too - in about 40 minutes or so I think. Not bad although I had made sure they knew I was a female travelling alone and on the way to picking up my young child and would need to arrange extra childcare if they were too long (ok, she was at a party but they didn't know that, and I didn't know how long they'd be!). I got several calls from AA and the Smart assistance to reassure me someone was on way,, ETA and afterwards to check I had collected by child ok with no problems - thought that was really nice of them

DH managed to get a cross town with his car to me around same time as the AA man.

For those 40 minutes I then had to simply sit in my car, seatbelted up (safest place apparantly) and wait whilst cars went round me and backed up at the junction

Thank you to the one man who stopped and ask if needed help at all. He also tried to help push the car to side of road but it was well and truely stuck and going nowhere.

to the one man who drove slowly past me, beeped his horn and waved his hand at me though. Did he really think i was sat in the middle of the roundabout for ages (obviously I had been due to traffic and hazards) for the fun of it!!!

When the AA man did arrive his was fab. He managed to get the car in a better position - he managed to move it by keep stalling it so it went forward a bit each time. He was so lovely and helpful. He couldn't repair the car so it had to be towed away. DH took over luckily and did that bit. AA man was somewhat bemused by my witches hat, cape, black cat and couldron (full of sweets for the party) that I insisted on taking to DH's car - and even more so by me having to take out my prison belt and keys, and ID!

He then took my car (with DH) to the Smart garage where it remains. And as it was isolated and I couldn't follow behind (I did have to get to DD by that time) he gave DH a lift back to where I was at the party. Apparantly they are supposed to just leave you where they take the car and it s up to you to make your own way home/back. Luckily he was really lovely and happy to help out.

However I now have no car The clutch has gone and something to do with hydrolics linked to it. As car is still new it is all under warranty, and it should be done by Friday. So, fortunately this isn't costing me anything. We are managing without a courtesy car for now. DD is going to school with her friend who lives at top of estate, and DH is going to work on the bus. I have his car for work as work much further away.

Really pleased this didn't happen last week in France. We'd forgotten my mobile and our phrase book - both in the bag I managed to leave in hallway at home! Phew.

I would have given him a big hug and a kiss
Not sure if safest place is in your car as what if somebody hits you?

The alternative was side of road - but was busy, lots of cars and lots of lane swapping because of my car [blsuh] So being at side of road wasn't an option. So inside the car and fastened in was better than that.

Aw, how nice that they were so helpful, hula.

But rather that your new car came to such a crashing end!! Pretty bad!!

Good on you for writing in though - it really does make a huge difference.

I love the AA. I have been a member for 20 years now. the last time they came out to me, it was because I couldn't start my car - it was often hard to start or needed jump starting. It turns out, the battery which the car came with when new was not big enough for the engine. Actually we knew this already but our attempt to get a proper one had failed as the garage had said it would takes weeks to order one in. When the AA man came out to me, he immediately said "This battery isn't powerful enough" and went and got me a proper one from some local depot - took him 20 minutes in all to fetch! Then installed it. All I had to pay for was the battery itself! They are a wonderful service.

On other occasions (too many to mention now!) they have often gone beyond the call of duty to help. I can't recommend them enough.

BTW Hulababy, I love the idea of you sitting in the middle of a roundabout in the evening deliberately holding up the traffic! What an amusing idea. I must try that myself! (not)

When that man beeped I me I was fuming. I mean, how many of us just hing I know, let's sit here, right in the middle of one of the busiest roundabouts in the city, andd have a laugh!!! Stupid man.

And to add to my embarrassment - it was on the roundabout right near our lovely Waitrose

I was rescued by the AA man on Tuesday morning. My car just died after dropping dd off at her dad's. It was windy, raining and hideous out. I was only just out of the 1/4 mile from home thing. It was 7am when I rang them and the guy was there by 740. He tinkered and whatnot but couldn't fix it. He towed me into town which was scary for me as have never been towed before. Arranged for my 2 day hire car that's part of my coverage. But then the car hire people rang saying they had no cars so he drove me to the nearest train station so I could get to work.

AA lovely. The garage fixing my car? Not so lovely. But that's a whole other thread!

Sadly, I am now furious and writing a letter of complaint to Smart! AA man looked at it and said lookign at the problem, and the newness of the car it'd be on the warranty. This morning the Smart garage said it would be on the warranty, and be ready by tomorrow morning. This afternoon they phone and say it is not covered by the warranty and it is caused by wear and tear - so I have to fork out of £800 to have it repaired, get no courtesy car and it will no take until end of next week.

So, it is normal for a clutch (and whatever it was underneath - can't remember name) to go completly after just 6 months and 10,000 is it?!

Seems like they are fitting substandard clutches to their cars if that is the case. I am furious. I will be writing and complaining.

I now have to find over £800 this weekned - great, eh?!!!
