Teeth - annoying notch/ridge on tooth due to receding gum line - driving me crazy!

So not sure if this is something many others may have experienced but I'm hoping there is someone out there that can relate or suggest anything.

I recently noticed a notch/ridge on one of my top teeth, and subsequently haven't been able to stop touching it with my tongue! It has been driving me crazy, I went to my dentist and and was told that it was a receding gum line, but as it's very slight and not causing me any problems there wasn't much they could do about it. If the gum line was quite severely receding then they could look at filling it, if they were to do that now they said that may mean chipping away at the tooth which they didn't advise.
The suggestion was to use a sensitive toothpaste if there was any tooth sensitivity but other than that just to stop touching it.

I know that's easier said than done but I just can't stay away from it.
I even went to another dentist for a second opinion, and was told that my teeth overall were in good condition, and that I should look at changing my brushing habits, as the receding gum line has been caused by aggressive brushing. They also said just to try to stop touching it.

I am happy to do all these things the dentists suggest, I just want to be able to smooth out the ridge/notch I can feel on the top of my tooth.
Or is this something I really have to try and ignore and live with.

I feel like I'm making a big thing about nothing, and obsessing over something trivial. I realise all I need to do is stop touching the tooth and that perhaps it's just a psychological thing but I just can't seem to stop!
Is there anyone else out there that has experienced this?

I've had that, and used to get a sore gum associated with it. Dentist (private) filled it with something and smoothed it all off. Worked a treat - ridge gone and gum healed. I also changed to an electric toothbrush as mine was caused by too much scrubbing.

Oh and they didn't chip away my tooth. Just toughened the surface a little to allow the stuff to stick.

Roughened!!

Oh thanks for your reply. Makes me feel a lot better, my other half has been getting so fed up of me going on about my teeth! I don't seem to have any problems with the gum, it's just so irritating and I think if anything I'm making my tongue sore from touching the ridge. I think I might go back to the dentist again, and see if they can do a similar thing.
I was also told to get an electric toothbrush so will get that sorted.
Thank you.

I had this (aggresive brushing plus too much fizzy pop eroded the enamel). I got it filled as was very self conscious about it as it was a noticeable dent and a bit discoloured. It's totally unnoticeable now both visually and for me to feel (I still poke it with my tongue out of habit!) and so I feel it was well worth doing. As the previous poster said they just roughened the surface and then filled it. I now use an electric toothbrush to avoid over brushing and don't drink fizzy drinks much. I wish I had had it filled much sooner now.

Just to say also, was a private dentist - don't know if that makes a difference.
