Awkward fireplace - remove or cover up?

We have a long rectangular sitting room with a marble fireplace on one wall. Currently, have a TV on same side and because of the way doors are on the other wall, it makes for a very awkward layout. You go in through door on the left and see the fireplace on opposite wall but you can't avoid walking around sofas to get to the other side. Ideally to make best use of room, would like to put TV on wall opposite fireplace and this allows corner sofa to be placed in the room facing telly. I have read in various places that removing the fireplace devalues your house (not that we are ever thinking of moving) so DH doesn't want to get rid of it. I am thinking of covering with a false sideboard, ie. looks like a sideboard but actually isn't.
Anyone got any ideas or suggestions ?

Firstly, I'd ask for this to be moved to Home Improvements or DIY as you'll get more traffic.

It really depends on your house. Is it period? If so, then the fire (depending on its design) will add value. If it's a 1970s bungalow then no, it wont add value.

Do you use the fire? Depending on the above, you could box it all in and create a false wall and then hang your TV on that.

Do you have an alternative heat source?
