Ok I don't even usually drive but our car has a persistant flat and dp (its his car really) is away so...

where how and how much?

we have a local kwik fit

I will be taking 2 toddlers with me at all times

I do not know of any delightful local characters who replace car tyres for a song and I would seriously doubt that any of my rl freinds do either

am in cardiff nr newport road

i would avoid kwik fit personaly but if that is all you have then you need to. I would aaoid for cost reasons is all. just go and say I need a new tyre, they'll srt it, take buggy as you can't sit in the car whne they are doing it

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 30/10/2006 08:06

do you know how much i am looking at?

i think its both tyres you have to replace, isn't it? (thus ends my knowlege of car tyres-except that they are good for growing potatoes in)

Personally I'd ring up before you go anywhere.

Get the same make of tyre that's on the other side of the car i.e Michellin Energy. (Know the size of the tyre 185/65 for example)

Ring the garage and ask how much they charge, does it include fitting, balancing, and I suspect you'll need the tracking and alignment doing too. (not worth paying out for new tyre and not to have it balanced, aligned, may aswell burn your cash)

Do not go to kwik fit, biggest pile of crap waiting to rip you off. They tried telling me they couldn't only do one new tyre for me as there wasn't the same amount of tread on the other and my car would be off the road on one side!! Erm.. yeah right!

I live down south, and I've paid £70 for a good make tyre inc. fitting and everything else I've mentioned, so you don't want to go much above that (unless you own a monster truck!) Maybe £90 tops.

HTH!

lolliepops · 30/10/2006 08:09

why dont you just put the spare on, and get him to do it when he is home? and if you have a flatty why would you need 2 tyres?
you can ask for budget tyres normally about 25 including fiting depends on the type of car

lolliepops · 30/10/2006 08:11

oh yes and go to little garage not a mian dealer as you will pay through the nose

mumatuks · 30/10/2006 08:20

sorry, but I have to say something here.

Please not budget tyres. It's just not worth it, especially as it's coming up to winter.
I know £70-£90 is alot to spend, but it's nothing when you know that your family is safer thanks to having some better tyres on the car

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 30/10/2006 08:21

have skoda fabia so little car

do not mind paying to make car safe (was in pile up last year, car safey big paranoid thing of mine).

thought you needed to replace both so one side was not pulling or something, or is that a kwik fit myth?

how hard is it to replace a tyre? do I need a jack? would there be one with the spare tyre?

I am quite used to doing stuff with bikes, but tend to steer clear of cars.

lolliepops · 30/10/2006 08:26

should imagine there will be a jack in with the spare and it is easy to do. you do not need to replace both tyres unless there is something wrong with the other one.

can I do it significantly wrong, do you know?

have images of wheel coming off car whilst tootleing down M4.

mumatuks · 30/10/2006 08:28

Is it a proper spare or one of those space saver ones (pram wheel!) if it's the latter, I would go buy a new one anyway and leave the spare where it is in the boot.

mumatuks · 30/10/2006 08:29

The Kwik fit myth you mentioned is exactly that, aload of bollox!

how do I know if its a pram wheel, tuks?

will it have, I dunno, m+ps on it?

OP posts:
mumatuks · 30/10/2006 08:31

the nuts actually tighten as you drive, so no, it shouldn't come off as you go along the M4!!
if anything you may have problems getting the old wheel off, especially if the were put on with the thing they use in the garage, rather than by hand!

mumatuks · 30/10/2006 08:32

believe me, you'll know a space saver, compared to a real wheel. You're limited to 50MPH on it, and yes you're right it'll have the psi and everything printed on the side

mousiemousie · 30/10/2006 09:01

Persistent flat means a puncture, not new tyres normally - and a puncture repair should cost under £15. Ring up 3 places and you should get it done for less than that, possibly for less than a tenner.

Tyres only need replacing when the tread has worn down.

Hope this helps

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 31/10/2006 07:22

oh wow , MM, I dind't know this.

thanks

OP posts:
mousiemousie · 31/10/2006 09:42

It only takes about 15 minutes too!

Let me know how you get on!

trixymalixy · 31/10/2006 17:19

We went to Kwik fit for a puncture repair. Left the wheel there and the guy phoned us to say that we actually needed a new tyre. My DH siad that he would come in to have a look at it as he disagreed that we needed a new tyre.

By the time he had got there the tyre had disappeared, funny that!!

we just took our wheel and went elsewhere to buy the new tyre as they were totally trying it on.

have you got a Costco near you, they do really cheap brand name tyres and fit and balance them for you while you wait.

cece · 31/10/2006 17:27

Kwik Fit actually repaired a puncture for me once for free

As long as there is no damage to side of tyre (plus a few other important places - not sure where though) should be able to just get a repair to puncture. No need for new tyre if it is just a flat and not worn down.
