Men are measuring my house

As i write this there are workmen measuring my backyard and walls. I just asked them what they were up to and with guilty looks they said it's confidential. This morning i recieved a letter saying the letting managers need to come round and expect the property for damage etc. Do you think my landlord has sold up as i am getting kind of paranoid. Anyone else in a rented property had this kind of thing. Cheers.

Can you not contact your landlord. You have a right to know whats going on. I would not be happy if people started ,easuring my property.
I know you don't own the property but i'm be pretty sure that you should of at least been notified if something was up.

tammybear · 26/04/2004 17:48

Well if the workmen were sent by your landlord, your landlord should have let you know before hand. I had that problem once, when my landlady just turned up and came into the house when I was away! My agent had to sort that all out. She was just expecting the house, and if there was anything that needed doing. The landlord may just be thinking of doing something to the backyard, not necessarily selling up. Do you have an agent that you can talk to?

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 17:49

I can't get hold of him, i don't trust anyone who asks you to call them Mr xxxxxx Esquire, as he does. Arse.

Usually your landlord has to give you 24hrs notice at the very least if they or their 'agents' (the workmen in this case) come round. The only exception is in an absolute emergency. You should have had notice and out of courtesy you should have been told why. It sounds dodgy to me.

tammybear · 26/04/2004 17:52

Did you go through a letting agency, cos if you did, contact them if you cant get a hold of your landlord

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 17:52

Agents closed, just rang, the men are measuring the entire row, and windows, really worried.

Did they come in a van ?? Was just wondering if it had a name on it that you could ring to investigate.

Nutcracker · 26/04/2004 17:54

The entire row of houses do you mean ?? If so, go ask some of your neighbours if they know whats going on.

tammybear · 26/04/2004 17:55

You could always try to ask them to leave unless they tell you what they are doing, cos technically since you're living there, they are on your premises. But saying that, I dont think I could do that lol

BadHair · 26/04/2004 17:56

Are the other houses owned by your landlord too?

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 17:57

Entire row of houses yes, he owns the lot, good idea re van, i'm going to run up to the end. Neighbours no nothing, pretty concerned themselves, but they're all young childless lads.

If he owns all the houses, then I doubt he would sell up. But I dont know a lot about this sort of thing. Ive only just been renting over a year

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 18:00

I'm sure they're estate agents or something, really nice car.

Hmmm very strange. I do think you have a right to know whats going on though, and don't take no for an answer.
A bit extreme but if they are refusing to tell you what they are doing there then threaten to call the police. That should either get rid of them or make them tell you what they are doing.

Nutcracker · 26/04/2004 18:02

Are they wearing suits or do they look like builder type people IYKWIM ??

coppertop · 26/04/2004 18:02

If he really is selling the entire row it's highly likely that they will be as a buy-to-let investment. You may just get a new (and maybe better?) landlord. It's easier to carry on with current tenants than to evict and find new ones.

Ring the agents first thing tomorrow.

BadHair · 26/04/2004 18:05

Can you bribe them with cups of tea? Failing that the police option is a good one - tell them that if they don't show you ID pronto you'll report them as intruders.

fairyfly · 26/04/2004 18:07

Thanks i will ring tomorow, they weren't wearing suits, just sweaty jumpered men, i'm sure i'm just worrying over nothing. It's very frustrating though and really annoying, to me it feels like there trespassing.

They've gone, i just asked them if they were building a swimming pool and they scarpered.

I just hope they know what 6 inches really looks like unlike most men

fairyfly · 27/04/2004 09:40

Ok, just rang agent, it's good news. They are building private little yards for us, security gates with pin numbers and ( sorry Beety) double glazing

Nutcracker · 27/04/2004 09:59

fairyfly · 27/04/2004 10:02

Thanks Nutty
