New cooker - any recommendations ???? Sad, sorry!

Moving house in 3 weeks, need to buy a freestanding cooker. I need a dual fuel double one (gas hob with electric/fan double oven). Or are all gas ones better.

Can anyone recommend good makes - I have no idea. Have seen a Stoves one, and a Smeg one but quite pricey and not sure if worth the money.

Is gas supposed to be better for ovens or electric?

Can't be any wider than 70cm so can't have a range style one.

Any recommendations?

I am very pleased with my smeg dual fuel one. It has different sized burners on the top, the fan oven heats up really quickly, and I think it is 66cm wide. The only disadvantage over the old style gas cookers is having the grill inside the oven. The advantage with an electric fan oven is that it gives you the option of filling the oven with things that need the same temperature, otherwise you are stuck with the 'cooler on the botton shelf' effect.

Put a plea out for Crunchie as i understand she works in the business and knows her makes!

I have a got a Belling and it's fantastic... it is a range style and i know you're not looking for such a big one but as a make it's great so far!!!!

kiwisbird · 26/04/2004 19:41

I would always choose gas over electric!
But again would try to get a double oven...
We had a Stoves one and it was very very good
It seems with ovens you get what you pay for

I'm here!! Personally I would never buy a smeg - it's all style over substance!! I would get a dual fuel one, the advantage is you will ususally get a fan oven which is great. Also make sure if you can that you get a double oven, with the top oven also a grill - the top oven is useful for smaller stuff or differnt temp. It depends on what style you want. I love my rangemaster, but I don't know if they do a 70sm one. Stoves is a good brand, one above Belling (same company) but marketed as a better brand, they are certianly more solid than Belling. If you like the Stoves one and it soes what you want I would probably choose that. Neff are also good by the way, but I don't know if they do free standing.

thanks Crunchie I've been waiting for you. I have an eye level double Neff jobby now, but the house I'm moving to has unmodernised kitchen so am buying good freestanding oven to go in there which will also suit when I modernise it.

Glad you said that about Smeg I suspected as much!

Would you say fan is better than gas oven then?

Think Stoves looks like the one then. Neff don't do freestanding.
Thanks.

LOFRA
I have a 70cm wide free standing beautiful stainless steal five gas burner multifunction electric oven
They are fantastic and the parts are guaranteed for 3 years

BadHair · 26/04/2004 22:36

I've got a stoves cooker - think its a newhome one - seperate oven and grill, 4 ring hob, one fast burner, one simmer ring and two standard ones.
Its absolutely fab but would definitely pay the extra money and get the double oven version though, would be very handy.
I think its 60cm width.

tatcity · 26/04/2004 22:37

suzywong - what make is it?

LOFRA is another unknown brand. I don't know much about it and therefore would be a bit iffy. Might be fab though. Also look at CDA, unknown but nice. Don't go for Baumatic - look great but useless. Electirc ovens seems to be better as they are more acurate with the temps and the fan ones cook a bit quicker and more evenly I'd say

tatcity · 26/04/2004 22:59

Thanks - will look at dual fuel Stoves one I think. Useful info!

LOFRA is utterly un-iffy it is the best cooker I have ever used and I used to cook for a living,
Check it out here

tatcity
this is the one I have, I needed to fill a 70cm gap like you
am not on commission, honest

Crunchie · 26/04/2004 23:17

Suzywong, sorry I didn't mean the brand I meant I didn't know the brand well enough so I would be a bit iffy However you are probably far more qualified than me if you actually cook for a lving. I just know the brands via work

tatcity · 26/04/2004 23:19

suzywong, thanks that's look really good. I needed a double though so will see if they do one. thanks again.

I see what you mean now Crunchie, sorry
I must say I haven't been so evangelical as this for ages, but I do so love my Lofra and you may know I am moving to Australia and can't take it with me, I am quite gutted. How sad am I?

Demented · 26/04/2004 23:30

tatcity, just to back up Crunchie, I had a Smeg in my last house (electric fan oven and gas hob) but here I have a Stoves (range cooker, electric fan oven, conventional oven, separate grill and gas hob) and I much prefer the Stoves. The Smeg had a hot spot in the oven whereas the Stoves oven heats evenly. The sparker on the Smeg broke within the first year and no bits have fallen off my Stoves yet and I have had it about a year now. The only thing I would say about Stoves is watch the quality, I noticed when choosing mine that some of them are very flimsy, go for the best you can, see if you can get cast iron pan supports if you go for gas.
