Have just fouind a whole load of houses available there. Always makes me think that there must be something wrong with the place if they have lots of empty houses but anyway, thought i might aswell ask.

The specific areas were...

Brambles farm
Hemlington
Grangetown
Southbank
Chruch Lane II estate
Pallister park
Grove hill

A couple of them mentioned something about being near to a park with Captain cook museum in, and with bus routes to Redcar, which is apparently a seaside place. Oh and there is a brand new secondary school too.

Be honest please, if it's crap tell me

Nutcracker · 25/04/2004 21:26

Thanks Pops

My lot are all Villa fans. Dp has taught Ds (16mths) to shout 'who are ya' at Blues fans, although Ds just shouts it at anybody.

If there's anywhere else in the north you fancy I know quite a few people in different places that would give me info

Smurfgirl · 26/04/2004 01:03

Hi! I am a lurker so sorry for butting in.

I am from Middlesbrough so I can help you a bit. Middlesbrough is actually ok as far as places go. Its incredibly cheap and it has the same inner city problems as everywhere else. Fairly high unemployment which has a lot to do with the closing of old industry, but loads of shop jobs and factory jobs. Its an hour away from Leeds, York and Newcastle which are great for shopping and days out. A few nice big parks. The people are incredibly friendly, currently I live away and when I go home I am always amaxed at how lovely people are. It gets talked down a lot but I think I will be moving back there in a few years because it is one of the few places in the country where I can afford to live once i graduate. And its the same as most slightly grotty places in the country.

Thats long sorry!! Pallister park is where i really know about...

Pallistar Park is OK...obviously it has the problems that many council estates have (Middlesbrough does have a high drug problem which is being clamped down on) so higher crime etc. BUT its actually a nice area. The schools are really good (my mam teaches in one and the kids are usually lovely). There is a huge lovely park there, a big swimming pool, a big morrisons and a lovely big library. Loads of get back to edcuation schemes for mums if you want a job there. The schools are heavily supported by the local football club which the kids adore. Well funded as well (my mam's school has a brand new computer suite).

The houses are arranged around smallish greens and are reasonably big (i have only been in a few when friends lived there). The estate looks nice, no burnt out cars and children play outside happily.

The new school is gorgeous, and captain cook museum in a HUGE park is about a 30 minute walk away, although Pallistair Park itself is nice enough!!

Other places to look locally are Darlington, and Stockton (if they have a house in Yarm claim it there and then its goregous there).

I hope this helps...obviously I am biased, but i think Middlesbroughs bad repulation is a bit unjustified.

Tissy · 26/04/2004 08:47

Don't apologise, smurfgirl, your post was rather more helpful than some!

I don't know anything about the specific areas, but have worked in Middlesborough, and agree that it has good bits and bad bits, and that the people are very friendly. There is some beautiful countryside around there, good bus links, and the seaside... Nutcracker, would you be able to go and see some of the areas before making a decision?

juniper68 · 26/04/2004 09:29

I live in Darlington nutcracker and I love it. We do go to Middlesbrough a lot as we love Ormesby hall and stewart's park. Darlington's park (south park)is being done up at the moment with a lottery grant. To be honest, I think you have to be careful wherever you live at the moment. We live on a private estate with some council houses/flats and there a quite a few drug dealers around. Probably in private as well as council? If you fancy Darlington at all try for a council house in springfield/whinfield as they're re- building the comprehensive and making a school village - first in Europe I think? It's had loads of money thrown at it and will incorporate nursery through to 16 possibly 6th form? We used to dread the days when our kids went to that comp but now can't wait

gingerbear · 26/04/2004 14:59

Nutcracker,
I was at Uni in Middlesbro (many moons ago) and the areas you mention were pretty rough then (late 80's, may have altered since then).

Middlesbrough prospered with the steel and chemical industry, and with the decline in these industries came the 'grim up north' tag, that I, being a Yorkshire lass defended vigorously. Many of these former industrial towns are having a 'rebirth'. Stockton and Hartlepool were in the news last week as having the highest rate of increase in house prices in the country.

The countryside is beautiful, - not far from the North York Moors (Heartbeat is based in Goathland)Durham and Whitby. I have fond memories of weekends spent yomping across the moors - ahh student days.

Agree with smurfgirl, juniper and Tissy, that the folk are really friendly - don't EVER call them Geordies though!!

juniper68 · 26/04/2004 16:59

Good tip gingerbear on the no geordie rule

Nutcracker · 26/04/2004 17:41

Well thanks for all the info guys. I'm still looking at the mo. Trying to find something abit closer to home.

All the info i get on here though is better than up my street

hi nutcracker, i know the area fairly well. was born in n yorks and lived there till recently. have also lived in darlington and one of my parents is a teacher in stockton. also had friends from mboro and spent alot of time there. i honestly wouldnt recommend that you move there, epecially not with a child, and especially not to the areas you mentioned. hope you find somewhere soon.

just want to add i am NOT anti north! i was born here, still live here and would never move away.

bundle · 28/04/2004 14:44

worked there years ago, felt miserable and it was v grotty. hull was much nicer

Northerner · 28/04/2004 14:52

Hi Nutty. Just see this thread, but this is my neck of the woods. I'm from Redcar and I worked in Middlesbrough before moving to Harrogate. My parents still live in Redcar and I have family and friends in Middlesbrough. Firstly I must say that it is not as bad as most people have suggested. There are lovely parks, countryside nearby, the seaside nearby, it's cheap and it has fantastic shops. However, the estates you have mentioned do have bad reputations, especially Grove Hill and Brambles farm. But it's not all bad, so don't rule it out if you have the chance of good accommodation.

aelita · 14/05/2004 12:41

Just to add my pennorth - sorry no advice to give you on the areas you mentioned - but I'm from the northeast (Saltburn specifically). I haven't lived there for years but I MISS it! I love the place, no matter what anybody says about it.

Northerner · 14/05/2004 12:42

Hi Aelita - I got married in Saltburn at Rushpool Hall. It's a beautiful little town. I'm from Redcar originally.

Do you remember Philmores nightclub?
