No real need to switch it off, but yes you can do that!

Am a mac user and can also do it from on-screen icon.

Rhubarb · 25/10/2006 13:34

There should be a little icon at the bottom right of your screen that is your connection icon, if you click on this you can disconnect. Just hover your cursor over the icons to find out what they are.

But like aDadOnMumsnet has said, there is no real need to switch off broadband unless you don't have unlimited access.

HauntedsandCastle · 25/10/2006 13:35

thanks aDadOnMumsnet, the reason I'd like to switch off is dd (3) likes to "check her emails" (no, she doesn;t have an account) but I think it's a good idea to switch off for this. Si I take it when pc is off, bb is off too? is that right? (can you see why I have got it before now??)

Yes you can turn off/unplug the router/modem, but Broadband is an always on product so it's not necessary.

Plus - every time you turn the router on/off it has to reconnect and re-establish a good connection speed so it's best to leave it always connected to maintain a decent speed that can stabilise.

Rhubarb · 25/10/2006 13:40

Yup you can switch off the pc! My ds likes playing with the pc too! Why not print out a nice colour picture, affix it to your pc screen when it's off and let them have a bash on the keyboard? Or do you not want to encourage her!

HauntedsandCastle · 25/10/2006 13:44

NO i don't mind her being on it. We often sit and do the Nick Jr games.

But she presses all the keys so randomly that she opened and closed some programmes, changing some settings! No big drama, but I don't want to have to worry about her seeing/changing something she shouldn't!

Just thought if I could d/c she wouldn't do too much damage!

Rhubarb, no icon, just a "safely remove hardware" icon. We are havng to use usb port, make a difference?

have the same problem here with little fingers that like pressing and clicking things!

How about just having screen/key lock function on so that if nobody has touched the machine for x minutes, you need to enter a password before you can use it again?

Rhubarb · 25/10/2006 13:53

Go into your start menu, then settings and change your screen settings to do what adadonmumsnet (can't be arsed with the capitals - sorry!) has suggested.

Don't click on the add/remove hardware icon, that's not a good idea!

HauntedsandCastle · 25/10/2006 13:57

rhubarb, I know about the hardware tab, i get that when I download from my digital camera. Will look into locking it, good idea!
