Would you say that School Office receptionists are the same species as Doctor's Receptionists?

I mean ... bat faced, bossy, rude, lemon sucking ogres????

I find the receptionists at DS's school objectionable and this morning I wanted to poke one of them in the eye

Who the hell do they think they are???????

BTW - the receptionists at my doctor's rooms are delightful but before them I don't think I have EVER met a nice one ....

Ours can be a like that, but I had a rather revealing chat with her DH a while back, where he told me how she used to come home in tears because of all the abuse she got from some parents. She had to 'harden up' or quit, so I'm a lot more sympathetic now. I work in the service industry too, and it only takes one foul mouthed old harriden to put you off sorts for the rest of the day (only human after all!)

Having said that......I do believe our doctors receptionists were transferred straight from the bowels of hell as them seem to go out of their way to be obstructive

The two schools I work at the receptionists are amongst the nicest people I have ever (and I mean ever) met.

They do seem to be nice to parents too.

Also the Doctors receptionists are lovely too. Maybe we just have loads of lovely receptionists in Christchurch.

What did she say to you ghosty?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/10/2006 01:38

Ahem......

ghosty · 25/10/2006 02:04

I have worked in schools where they are really lovely ... smiling and helpful - in fact, in one school we all believed that the school secretary was the only one thing that kept the school running and the headteacher was actually a puppet

But these bloody women at DS's school are awful. I call every Wednesday afternoon to check that DS's soccer is on ... I didn't used to but one day he appeared at home at 3.15 having walked home on his own because it was cancelled - no one had called to let us know ... so now I ring ...
Call goes like this:
"Hi there, I am just ringing to see if Soccer is on today"
" Yesssss, as far as we know ...."
"Thanks so m ....." and before I get a chance to finish my sentence and say goodbye she hangs up! Soooooo bloody RUDE! I don't care HOW busy/stressed she is .... I know how stressful life is at a school - there is NO excuse for rudeness!

So this morning I went in to ask for a form for the school disco (DS was away when the notice went out). "Morning! Can I please have a form for the disco, my son missed the notice as he was ill, and I would like to pay today"

Silence.
She goes over to a tray (Sucked Lemon Face) and gets said form and just hands it to me (Sucked Sour Lemon Face)
"Thank you so much." I read form and say, "$2 per person, does that include preschoolers?"
with her back to me, "Whatever it says on the form."

So, I fill in the form. Get out $20 note from my purse and stand waiting, murmuring to DD cheerfully. Finally SHE turns round, raises her eyebrows at me as if to say, "What?" but doesn't say a word. I smile and hand over the form and the money.

"You'll have to wait for change, we are totally out today!"
I smile and say, "That's not a problem, will it be in DS's book bag later maybe?"
"I have no idea!"

So I just said, "Well, I'll check when he gets home then."

I smiled cheerily and said, "Thanks SO MUCH .... " and left feeling like I wanted to poke her with something sharp

Such a cow!

Oh VVVQV ... didn't mean to upset you ... are you school or doctor's receptionist? Or someone you know? I am sure there are lots of good 'uns out there .... ... don't be cross

i find they are like the little girl - when they are good - they are very very good - when they are bad they are positively horrid - from one who has worked in too many schools to remember and come across all sorts.

eidsvold · 25/10/2006 03:20

and had to deal with more docs receptionists than I care to remember as well..... stil do in fact.

threebob · 25/10/2006 07:58

I think this says more about the communication between the teachers/principal and the receptionist than anything.

The happy ones are always under the impression that they run the school (and in some areas I am sure that they do), rather than they have to do everything or else the school would fall to bits. There is a difference.

Blandmum · 25/10/2006 08:02

The ones in our school are fab

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/10/2006 13:13

LOL! Im not cross - I'm a receptionist in a hospital. But its a private one, so you're guaranteed a smile, whether I feel like it or not

suedonim · 25/10/2006 14:17

You've got it wrong, Ghosty. The sour faced ones aren't receptionists, they're reJectionists because whatever you ask them the answer is always no!

Bozza · 25/10/2006 14:20

Actually the one at our school is lovely and has always been very helpful to me.
