Oh crap, just found mouse poo... in dining room!

Just found mouse poo in the dinning room. Food is never left in there as our dog hoovers it up but we do have a cockatiel in there so the mice I guess are after the seed.
Any suggestions whats the best way to oust these unwelcome creatures?

Just as I thought I'd won the war on the mice in the walls, the rats are back in our outbuildings & garages. So I have spent today laying poison & baiting the trap.Only problem is it is a humane trap & I am not releasing the horrible things to have them come right back afterwards.I will have to dispose of them somehow.

2mum · 24/10/2006 22:53

I would get my husband to do that Mirage, no way would i be brave enough to go near rats.

Deffo more mouse action last night, found more poo on ds1's chair! . Also discovered some poo in the lounge . Really need to get this sorted, but don't know where the money will come from as we're soooo broke

can you not afford to buy a couple of traps? they're only £1.50 each, maybe you can find them even cheaper in a farm shop...

Bear in mind that mice are basically incontinent and pee frequently whilst moving, so make sure you mop.

burstingbug · 25/10/2006 11:04

Will see if we can get one. It'll be a good test to see how far £5 goes to buy family food for a week and a trap

dh, won't budge on the matter, he wants to get rid of them humanely. we have to live with them for a week. he says we don't have a problem - nextdoor does because its empty and thinks they're coming from there. We just have 'visitors'.

bb... tell your DH that whilst humane is all lovely and nice the wee buggers will just keep coming back and back and back. And they'll go to your neighbours houses.

I'd also remind him that beating ones husband over the head with hundreds of dead mice and a fryiing pan is anything but humane!

We've had the buggers and what on earth is the point of humane......... bleurrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! As someone else said... this is war!

geekgrrl · 25/10/2006 13:24

could you get a cat?

Mice are vermin ffs, they don't need to be treated humanely. As well as spreading diseases with their urine and faeces they chew through everything - electrical wires, furniture etc.

MerlinsBeard · 25/10/2006 13:25

we got bait boxes that have the bait permanently in them, the mice go in eat the bait and depending on how much they eat they die quite quickly. they were very effective but the best wau to stop them long term is to find out where they are coming in. we were lucky that we knew exactly where they were coming in from.
I think with humane traps you need to dispose of them something daft like 5 miles away , the ordinary wooden traps didn't work in our house, the mice just ate the chocolate!

burstingbug · 25/10/2006 13:28

I know, but dh is so stubborn sometimes. I'll keep pushing him to oust them quicker. We can't get a cat because we have a dog but even he doesn't seem bothered by mouse presence.

burstingbug, you have my sympathy.I am surprised at your dh's attitude-how humane would he be feeling towards them if you all cam down with Salmonella or other mouse borne nasties?

Would you like me to post you a mouse trap-the deadly kind?I have one somewhere I'm sure.

Mirage · 25/10/2006 20:25

2mum,I deal with all the 'nasty' jobs in our house,or they wouldn't get done.

There was no evidence of rats eating bait or going near the trap last night-perhaps they have moved on.

2mum · 25/10/2006 20:45

Mirage i feel for you as i physically couldnt deal with dead mice, rats and really big spiders! At times like that i value my dh so much lol

CorpseBride · 25/10/2006 21:43

We bought a sonic thing. I was rather sceptical but we haven't had any mice in the house since.

A friend used poison and had to put up with the smell of rotting mouse under her floorboards. Bleurgh!!!

sputnik · 26/10/2006 11:54

You think you have it bad, BB. Went away for the night and came back to find some in our and DD's bed! AAARG! The morning after we had slept in it [hysterical fit emoticon]!
