I am a student nurse, I just started my second year, we run on a 3 semester year...

I finally got my results for my final semester of first year (65 on an essay!) but there are issues...

The document we are assessed by on placement (we call it a CAP) for semester 2 was lots of loose sheets held together in a ring binder. I am sure I handed it all in but cannot prove this. On results day for semester 2 I got a letter from the uni saying my CAP was missing one page and they would hold my results for the 3 modules I had taken until I had this page signed by my mentor and I was to hand it in on the next assessment hand in date. The page 'missing' was basically a summary page in which my mentor had to sign next to the learning outcomes for the placement set by the university to indicate I had passed them. Throughout the CAP I had written the details of how I had achieved my learning outcomes and they had all been signed off by my mentor, this was literally a grid she had to sign.

So today I get my results and for the 3 modules that the 2nd semester CAP was part of I have been given 40 and they have been marked as a resit. I did not lose this page, the uni did, when I went back to my placement to get my mentor to resign the page she even remarked that she had done this already.

I passed these 3 modules first time and I got very good marks for them (93%, 66%, 75%) and I can prove that I never resat them it was a minor mistake with my CAP and it was never ever in question that I had passed the placement.

I am thinking of complaining, I do not want it written on my transcript that I failed and resat these modules. Am I being silly? Will I get anywhere - please help! Do you think they are right?

Hi,

Contact your Student's Union and check out the Appeals Regulations. It sounds like you might have good grounds for an appeal to me (used to do this sort of thing for a living and it looks like Uni error) but it'll depend on the detailed Regs. Do you have some sort of official record of your original marks?

Come back to me if you need more advice - I'll watch the thread.

Complain- and complain loudly. Something very similar happened to my best friend a couple of years ago. The uni lost her exam results and incinuated that she had never sat the exams ( she had) and would not allow her to graduate/regsiter as a nurse. It took months and months but eventually, they accepted that they had lost the results and allowed her to graduate.

cant understand why they would give you a 40% if its only your first page that they have lost, thats very unfair.

They said because the CAP is a part of the modules, you have to pass the CAP/placement to pass the modules thats FINE. I passed the bloody CAP - it was one page summarising my pass that was missing not any of the details, I can't prove they lost the page though

Oh and the letter said they would 'hold the results for me' i was not told that it would go down as a resit, i even asked my personal supervisor about this and she said no, once you hand in the piece of paper they release your results.

go to student union (local or national) and to a student rep for your course/year (if you have them). These are the people who are used to sorting out problems like this and may know what to do.

What I would do as well (Though it might be better to check this first) is send a letter recorded delivery pointing out that you handed in a complete folder which they have then lost part of and you have been penalised for this - which you were told would not happen. Also that you are seeking futher action. If you send it recorded delivery then you can prove that they have received this and are aware of your position on this.

HTH - really do get in contact with your students union as they are used to dealing with this kinda thing - that is why they are there. I hope you get this sorted.

I have e-mailed my personal supervisor this morning to see what she will say, I have been told that we only have a week to appeal but she if off until next Thursday!

I'm very suprised that you're only given 7 days to appeal! Which Uni? Have you tried Students Union yet? Anyone else in Nursing Dept that you could see in the absence of your Personal Supervisor?
