our car vs 32tonne LGV

yesterday, when we were on our holiday we decided to go swimming at clacton leisure centre. we had a lovely hours swimming and then decided to head back to teh sea front. as we were leaving the car park we came to a T junction. as we got there we saw a 32 tonne lorry cutting the corner and on our side of the rd and knew it was going to hit out car. there was nothing we could do. he hit drivers side of the car, pushed us back around 2metres and has destroyed the drivers side of the car. we all got out ok, i gave the lorry driver a right earful. had to go to hospital as have whiplash injury. so now it looks like our car will be written off. we spent yesterday afternoon on the phone to insurence company, trying to sort out getting the car picked up to be assessed, and also to get a hire car to get us home. we have to now replace the car seats for our dd's so will be sending reciepts to the insurence company to try and get those back.

i think we can say in the fight between the vechiles, ours lost.

Defo.... I am just glad you are all ok, coz I love you all!!

suzywong · 23/04/2004 22:38

how scary
think yourselves very luck
I saw a RTA on the North Circular today, 2 cars and a truck, the cars looked as though a giant had picked them up and just dashed them against the tarmac and the truck's windscreen was shards of glass, dozens of police and fireman. Very sad, I don't think anyone got out of it alive.

Hopefully that's your ration of car accidents for good

What a shock for you all - hope you feel better soon and how are the kids and dh?

suedonim · 24/04/2004 00:12

Insanidee, how horrible. I can imagine how you're feeling as some idiot lorry driver nearly wiped out both dh and me today - and we were in separate cars!! We'd gone different places and dh just happened to be following me home when a lorry came round a narrow bend far too fast and on the wrong side of the road. I had to swerve out of the way, as did dh, and dh could see that he missed my car by only a millimetre or two. The fright made me feel faint as I was driving and I had to pull myself together before I passed out. There was a fatal accident at that corner last July - now I know how it happened.

I hope your whiplash doesn't trouble you too much and that you get the insurance sorted out ok. The sheer hassle these things cause is just as awful, the phone calls and so on, and I know you don't need any more stress. Take care.

Insanidee and Suedonim

What an awful experience. I hope your whiplash injury is better soon, Insanidee.

All i keep seeing is the lgv (looks like a dumper truck) wheels just hitting the bonnet, glass splintering everywhere and the fact he didnt see us till he hit us, the look on his face as he heard the crunch. dh couldnt get out of his door as its buckled, i screamed at the LGV driver, then went to get my kids out. he told me to 'give me the baby, you shouldnt be lifting her', at which point i told him again to f*ck off, he wasnt having my baby'. The kids were more scared than hurt, but dd1 has bounced back quickly, she is now telling everyone a 'big lorry hit the car, crash bang, it broke the light, the side and daddys door'

my neck is hurting like mad, so have to go see my gp, not sure whether or not to press charges against the driver, or to sue for injuries. but i do want to go and batter him. We have a coutesy car for 14days from the insurence company, they gave us a fiat punto, so my dad came down to pick up our suitcases and things as there was no way we'd get those in a punto. got dd1 new carseat on the way home, just now gotta get dd2 one sorted. altho the car seats appear ok i just dont want to risk it really. dh wants to go and look at mobility cars available as its highly unlikely they will repair our car, so this AM i think we are heading to the ford and vauxhall garages. altho he did say he wanted a mazda mx-5 convertable that is available, just me and the kids would have to walk, cheeky man!!

insanidee - if your necks hurting you should go to a & e and try and get the lorry drivers insurance company to pay for a bigger car (what do you normally drive?)

As for your injuries, see how they progress. If you suffer for more than about 2-3 weeks then see A LAWYER NOT A CLAIMS COMPANY!!!! and if you do make sure you keep 100% of any damages award. You do not have to pay anything.

Hope you feel better soon - Mazda MX5 does sound nice though doesn't it!!

we had (sob) a vauxhall cavalier, very roomy, huuuuuuuuuuge boot. i dont drive, but it was my car. i was meant to be starting my driving lessons back up, but yesterday on the way home very time we passed a bus, lorry or even a MPV i was worrried they were gonna hit us, so think it may be a little while longer b4 i venture behind the wheel.

Keep a note (and a receipt if possible) of every expense you have to fork out as a result of this. You will presumably be putting in a personal injury claim, as well as a damage claim, and you can claim back any out of pocket expenses as well. Go to a&e now and get records started. How is your dh? Was he injured in any way?

Sounds horrific. Glad to know none of you is too seriously hurt.

LIZS · 24/04/2004 08:44

Sorry to hear about the accident but atleast you are all generally ok. Do make sure you get the whiplash treated - insurance should pay for private physio if needs be. Keep a log of all treatment as you have a few years to register a claim should it persist.

It may sound a bit odd but the best thing would be to get into a car as soon as is feasible with the whiplash. I had a minor prang on black ice a couple of years back and still hate driving in snow and ice but have to, so forced myself back out the next day.

Hope you feel better soon

Glad you are ok Insanidee. There must be something in the air atm. Coming home from a wedding reception last night we saw 2 separate smashes.
