House contents insurance - what is covered?

We have contents insurance so when my fridge freezer broke, I gave them a call.
They took all my details (policy number, name, address, item that we are claiming for) but at this point I asked what the procedure was.
It was then pointed out to me that seeing as its a mechanical breakdown, its not covered by the insurance. I was told that if I had broken it myself it would have been covered even though my policy clearly states that we do not have accidental damage cover.

She said we can claim for the contents of the fridge if we compile a list. I didn't want to as its not a great loss. Apparantly I am still going to get a letter for this claim even though I never went through with it. Apparently it won't go against my no claims discount but I don't see why they even have to log the claim when it didn't happen.

I'm really annoyed at them, she wasn't able to tell me what exactly is covered which just annoyed me more. I have been paying them for the past 2 years for what reason exactly?!

Can anyone enlighten me what exactly is covered with contents insurance?
(I wonder if someone had broke in and stole my fridge if they would have replaced it then? I'll have to remember that for next time I need to claim for something!

It will all be in your policy document. That pile of paper you hid away without reading it first Most contents insurance policies don't cover mechanical breakdown. Almost everything breaks down eventually - if everyone got a new Tv off the insurance everytime their old one broke down premiums would be astronomical. Insurance is to cover unexpected events - fire, theft, accidental damage, lightning strikes etc.

I'm sure it is all wrote down in the documents they sent, now where did I put them?!
It doesn't matter now anyway, we ordered a new fridge today and paid for it ourself.
