There's a debate about this on the ashamed to be English thread ....................

Twinkie · 23/04/2004 12:19

i am proud to be English and even put it on my census form - the welsh could be welsh and scottish could be scottish but I had to be British what a load of stuff and nonsense - I would have dragged them through the courts for racism if they had made me put British!!!

Northerner · 23/04/2004 12:19

Must admit to not knowing alot abot George and the dragon though. That's not very good is it?

Codswallop · 23/04/2004 12:33

I am ignoring the other thread, today is a day of celbration!

Angeliz · 23/04/2004 12:50

I saw a guy talking about it on GMTV this morn, saying that maybe we don't celebrate for fear of offending anyone!!

Who..the Dragon?

Have a good day one and all

Will tell you later. They are getting married in a place by the river in Greenwich. Family only tho, so we are going to the reception this evening.

dogwalker · 23/04/2004 14:40

I too am proud to be English. I love St George's Day. It's 11 years since I gave up work to have DS1 and a colleague at work gave me a rose bush to remember the day by.

Bugsy2 · 23/04/2004 15:15

I'm going to annoy you all by saying I'm both proud and ashamed. I'm English and I think I represent what is good about England: broad minded, tolerant, good humoured and even speak nicely.
However, I have just been for lunch in Covent Garden and some "true Englsish boys", all with their england shirts on and very shiny heads were kicking off. Just songs to start with and then moving on to Nazi saluting, then shouting at people who look foreign and then trying to attack anyone who had the audacity not to share their sense of patriotism.
Needless to say the boys in blue turned up en masse and moved them on.
I know that most countries have bigots and racists but I'm glad that I still feel ashamed of people like that and their sense of Englishness.

Nutcracker · 23/04/2004 15:21

My kids love St Georges day. We have a big flag hanging out the window. Have seen quite a few today which makes a nice change.

CountessDracula · 23/04/2004 15:39

Bugsy doubt they give a toss about being English, any excuse for a ruck if you ask me.

lydialemon · 23/04/2004 15:56

We always celebrate St Georges Day, as it is DHs name day.

Have a good one!

suedonim · 23/04/2004 16:25

And Happy Shakespeare's Birth-and-Death Day. Dd2 wanted to know if Willie got to open his presents before he kicked the bucket!
