Any hairdressers? I want to cut a bob

Following on from my ahem hair thread...

Im going to have a big tat busting mission tonight and try and get the tangle out - I would also like to cut her hair to make it more manageable - I dont want to take her to the hairdressers as she had nits a while ago and Im still trying to get rid of stubborn dead eggs (I know they will understand but I dont want to take her as feel embarassed)

Anyway, I have scissors and a comb, does anyone have any tips - at the moment her hair is all one length past her shoulders I would just want to take a couple of inches off all over.

Tie in a hairband right at the front of her head - like a unicorn horn IYKWIM - and lop it off at one length - saw it on the TV - produces a nice sort of graduated cut!!

Mind you I would give a mobile hairdresser to come round and do it, just about had the courage to cut DDs fringe and made a hash of that most days!!

Not a hairdresser as you know but I have just cut DD's hair as it was getting horrendously tangled and couldn't get her to the hairdressers due to DS's chickenpox. I sat her on a stool and started on her fringe. Used clips to keep hair out of the way behind her ears and started on her fringe. If I'd have had clips I would have clipped up the top layer of hair at the back of her head and started cutting a thin section of the hair underneath at the level I wanted and worked round that way cutting it layer by layer, but I didn't so I just made the first cut in the middle and started from there. Cut to one side first at roughly the same level, then the same on the other side. Then I used a comb to comb each section straight and cut the ends as straight as I could all the way round. Got her to lean forwards and trimmed round again, then tip her head each side. Looked at her from the front and pulled bits either side of her face straight to check they were equal. Then wet her hair slightly and combed round again trimming any bits I'd missed. Her hair sounds as if it was the same as your DD's when I started, I took roughly 2 inches off.

Hopefully someone who knows what they are doing will give you some hints. I'm actually quite pleased with it and it wasn't as hard as I thought - lots of people have complimented her but I think that's because it was in such a state before!!

The woman who cuts my hair told me that if I was ever really in a pinch, the best thing to do would be to put my wet hair in a ponytail and cut the ponytail. Like Twinkie says, it creates a graduated kind of cut --- I think a little shorter along the sides and longer along the back.

Good luck!
