Help me find some trousers for ultra skinny DD

Nutcracker · 21/04/2004 21:32

My dd1 aged 6 is very very skinny and i cannot find any trousers to fit her.
If they fit her in the leg then they are way to big around her waist, and even a belt doesn't help.
So far i have tried Next, Gap, Asda, Adams, H&M, BHS and many more.

She is now down to one pair of jeans which are actually too big and two pairs of jogging bottoms.

Try French clothes (mail order)? Or buy elasticated waists and pull the elastic in a bit more?

CT - That link goes to Yes Yes Yes .com

Beety - She did have some gap jeans with the elasticated waist when she was 5 and they fitted fine. When they got to short i tried age 6 and pulled the elastic right in but they looked silly.
It doesn't help that she has no bum either.

pumpkin patch are large sizing but have many trousers generous in length but with adjustable waists, used these with Ds as he was tall and skinny
these may be ok?
Otherwise continental and designer gear is slimmer, buy off ebay.. I have twig like dd at 18 mths thank god for nappies, heaven knows what I will do after she leaves nappies behind

Nutcracker · 21/04/2004 21:47

Kiwi - Trust my dd to need designer or continental clothes. I'm sure she must of been posh in a previous life

Will try Pumpkin patch, thanks.

Nutcracker, just wondering if your DD has always been slim, and if she has, where did you shop for her when she was younger? I'm having massive problems clothing my DD (2), it's always been difficult but seems worse now! She was given several items of clothing for her birthday recently, none of which will ever fit her as by the time the waist did, the trousers would look like shorts! I'm running out of options too......and trying to avoid getting sewing machine/needle out unless I have to! (Looking likely at this stage though!)

tatcity · 21/04/2004 22:28

Have same prob with DD1 who is 4.5.

She just wears skirts now, impractical I know, but better than showing off her builders bum to the boys in the playground.

Nutty - my dd is long in the leg and narrow round bum and waist (cow!!!) when she was little I bought quite a few pairs of jeans etc from Beneton (used to be one in Brum opposite Druckers at the end of Great Western Arcade). Initially went there 'cos really liked the lime green DKNY ones in Bratz but couldn't justify £55 so thought £20 in Beneton for similar sounded a snip!!! Fitted her beautifully.

grumpyzebra · 22/04/2004 03:37

How much would it cost to find a seamstress and ask them to make some trousers to order? Wouldn't it be less than £20/pair?

Nutcracker · 22/04/2004 11:09

Levanna - Yeah dd has always been slim. When she was younger her nappy used to help hold her trousers up, and i just used to roll them over at the top. She also had quite a few pairs of dungarees and lots of dresses.

I also have to get smaller/shorter skirts. Her school skirts are age 4-5, and she has a pinafore.

Does anyone else find H&M's clothes rather big around the waist. I really like their stuff but i've never been able to get trousers to fit dd1 as they are always enormous. She has a few skirts from there though, age 3.

Nutcracker - I have a similar problem with my dd - a very long legged skinny one - we are going to have a nightmare in a few years time - I am kicking myself as I took loads of stuff to the charity shop the other day including several pairs of trouser, I bet they would have fitted your dd (ggrrrrr). I have always had the opposite problem with my ds so my first point of call was those shops that I have never managed to get stuff to fit ds - as froot suggested - Ladybird at Woolies always comes up skinny, Pumpkin Patch seem to be quite large on the waist. Have managed to get some nice jeans from Tesco for her (but I am boycotting them at the moment), I have had a reasonable success rate at TK Maxx with their designer stuff - Adams don't fit, BHS don't fit, H&M used to fit but now she is in the larger age group don't any more. I have managed to get a couple of pairs in Debenhams in the past. Thankfully, dd is not a great fan on trousers so we never have to buy many pairs. Tanzie, funny you mention French clothes, I have bought loads of stuff from French supermarkets for dd - fit her beautifully. We often go for cheap daytrips over the water.
Froot - re. your dd - I tend to buy my ds' school trousers from BHS as they come in waist sizes and leg length - not sure if they do the same for girls.

motherinferior · 22/04/2004 11:33

Exactly the same problem with dd1. I resort to extra elastic, bootleg leggings, and pinafore frocks.

H&M is ENORMOUS for her.

Dd2 is a bit chunkier, thank heavens.

kiwisbird · 22/04/2004 11:48

nutty same here, posh togs abound for my little princess and her skinny ass!

kiwisbird · 22/04/2004 11:49

with pumpkin patch what I meant is that they are really big sizing, but the legs are longer so you could get away with a 4 or 5 and still have adequate leg length, does that make sense?
LOL

scubawoman · 22/04/2004 11:52

Nutcracker - I know you say you have tried Gap, but at the moment they have got some jeans in with the elastic on buttons inside called Long and Lean, they are also slim fit. I have exactly the same problem with my DD, she is 6 too, but these ones are brill as they are fitted more than normally around the waist and upper legs with a boot leg so she doesn't look like a clown! When I find a decent fitting pair of trousers I always buy the next size up too.

sammac · 22/04/2004 21:31

I've got the same problem with dd and remembered last night in bed what was the best make- its DKNY. It seems to be made for tall, skinny girls. The best jeans ever I got in sale at Frasers, but given away. Didn't want to clothe her in such pricey stuff, but got my cousin in US to send me stuff- it's a fraction of price there. Might be worth ebay.com the american version, and get slow postage- can be quite quick.

I always have to take in darts at waist, but Gap are not bad with the elastic waists.

Good luck

melsy · 22/04/2004 21:34

Havent read all thread , not sure if this range comes up in bigger sizes so could be wrong, but large mothercare branches do a french range called OCAIDI (sp?), well fitted and good shapes.

Boden trousers come up quite long - your dd could maybe have an age 5-6 and would be alright. They also have elasticated/adjustable waists. They do "baggies" and bootleg shapes, both are lovely. Good luck! www.boden.co.uk

Codswallop · 23/04/2004 11:57

marks and spencer but an age younger then yshe is

momof2 · 23/04/2004 12:00

For step DD I usually make sure I get trousers with belt loops and then just by the seam on each side of the waist I sew up a fold of the waist band (about 1 inch folded over) I am useless at sewing but it does seem to work - I just use running stitch v. small at the top of the fold and the bottom, it doesn't look too bad and they stay up.
