contraception: alternatives to the pill

I've been on the pill now for almost 20 years apart from a short spell when trying to have DS. Dp & I are pretty sure we don't want another, but don't want to commit ourselves to a definate 'no' and DP having a vasectomy. However, we are becoming worried about the risks of the pill and its possible links to breast cancer so are beginning to research some alternative conctraceptions.

Do any of you have any advice? What are the pros & cons of the different options and do any of you have any experiences that would help us make some decisions. Of course, I will see my GP at some stage but want to do a bit of research first and thought there would be a wealth of advice here.

I would strongly advise you dont have Depo Poreva 3 monthly injection. I had this once and that 1 injection gave me nearly 2yrs of misery with constant bleeding and sickness and headaches, i know alot of people who have had problems with it but im sure there are people who have got on fine with it.

I'm on the non-hormone coil... no problems as of yet, but no period yet either.

mirena coil

gets a bad press from some

i came off the pill as been on it 10 years....and strong family history of DVT...feel our family is complete ( for now! ) and only 31 so too young for sterilisation...but wanted no hassle and effective contraception

my gp is a familly planning expert...so had long chat and she suggested the coil

5 years of not having to remember to take or do anything!

first couple of months - bleeding and spotting...since then, very light periods..sometimes lasting only a day!! and no problems!!

Thanks..I've been on the pill so long & I do feel its the easy option..I suppose I'm a bit worried about making a big change.

I started a thread on this recently and got some excellent replies which I found very helpful. Am crappy at links but the title was 'Embarrasing question..' or something lame like that... in Health. HTH.
