Is the estate agent a bit odd or is it me?

We went to view a house twice, first time me,dh,ds,dd plus mil and bil (who live a couple of doors away and just wanted to compare houses)

Second time it was just dh,me,children plus my mum, dad and brother. Who we wanted to see it to offer their opinion. Anyway the second viewing the twatty estate agent suggests we do the viewing in 2 groups so he can "keep an eye on everyone!"

We ignored him and all trooped in and had a look around. Our offer was refused so we are viewing another house this evening.

Estate agent phones this morning to ask if "the whole gang are coming" I said no just us and kids. He replied "That's good because last time i couldn't keep up with who was where and i was worried that one of the children might get left inside at the end."

I think i might notice if i left a child behind!
So is he a bit odd (maybe he thinks we were going to steal the lightbulbs or something. Empty house btw.) Or is it me thats strange?

Maybe he just wants to talk everyone through every room as you go, and know about any problems you spot? I guess?

I'm being generous here, he sounds a bit mad, tbh.

LIZS · 19/10/2006 15:04

As a vendor I find having an extended family veiwing hard work and overcrowded, and would think it slightly odd to do so for a first viewing , sorry ! EA sounds a bit strange though

TheBlonde · 19/10/2006 15:04

He sounds normal to me
Do you always take a big posse when househunting?

WitchICouldGiveUpWork · 19/10/2006 15:12

Have to agree with LizS and TheBlonde-I hate having large numbers view our house-actually hate anyone viewing the house but not going to sell it unless I let them I suppose.

edam · 19/10/2006 15:16

Agree I wouldn't like a big group traipsing round my house on a first viewing. Had this last time I sold and it was just too much. My immediate response was that they were timewasters, sorry. Got two asking price offers first day it went up, both from people who came round on their own and then brought back their partners for second viewings.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 19/10/2006 15:16

I guess its their reputation on the line if something happened.

Although the house was empty maybe he was worried about someone leaving a window/door unlocked to sneak back in later to steal something/cause damage/squat.

You'd be surprised at what people do.

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 19/10/2006 15:18

I obviously don't mean you or your family tunise -scared you might take that the wrong way

edam · 19/10/2006 15:41

Oh, missed the fact it was empty. I guess estate agent is just worried about marshalling a big group then. It is tiring, dealing with seven people including children who you worry might break something or jump off something and hurt themselves.

bloodyhowler · 19/10/2006 15:41

When we were selling we had a few couples who brought the whole family it drove me mad tbh Why do you need to take them all?

Drusilla · 19/10/2006 15:57

I think EA is just finding it a bit odd to have that many people at a first viewing tbh

tunise · 19/10/2006 16:17

Fair enough maybe i'm the strange one! But the vendor wasn't there, house empty and the biggest group was on the 2nd viewing when we were trying to decide what amount to offer.(If the vendor was living there prop wouldn't take extended family.)
We are first time buyers so wanted our families input.

He's also started calling me 'darling' on the phone, I assume this is normal? (for grease ball estate agents)

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 19/10/2006 16:20

he just sounds like a grease ball calling you darling!

LIZS · 19/10/2006 16:47

bleurgh "darling" - [vomit emoticon]

trixymalixy · 19/10/2006 17:33

We had a massive family round viewing our house and the kids were all over the place opening drawers etc, I found it really stressful and very intimidating.

Not that I'm suggesting your family would do this, but I can understand the EA's concerns when he is responsible for the house.

Tutter · 19/10/2006 17:54

he sounds odd

but i would also find it odd if such a large group came on a viewing

would expect just the people who were going to live there
