Whats special about gMail

I have been sent an invitation by a collegue as it may give me a cheap (free) possibility of hosting my web-site.

Why is it so special that you have to be invited? What can it do that other mail accounts can't?

Anyone?

I don't know to be honest. I have an account but don't use it really. There is a lot of storage space, I know that, and I get a daily Pubmed round-up that used to be sent via a university account but now comes via gmail, so I am guessing it's better in some way for large scale mailings?

Huge storage space.

Really nice interface.

Very easy to use.

No huge graphical ads all over the place.

Reliable.

How does gmail help you host your website, though?

taMummy · 18/10/2006 18:46

At the risk of stating the obvious...

I can't work out the hosting thing at the moment either. The person that sent me the invite says they host their website there & recommended it. Will have to ask more about it tomorrow.

Maybe it is the huge storage????

They did say they use their gmail storage as a file server for use with the firefox browser - but I don't know. I am not really that up on all this...

I've used gmail for quite a while now. I understand that the invite thing is a combination of cheeky marketing and beta testing.

Every so often they introduce new features (it was pretty basic in the beginning) like the calendar.

I like gmail because I can access my emails from anywhere, and, the search feature means I can find emails really easily.

Like most gmail users I have loads of invites spare if anyone wants one.

RTKangaMummy · 18/10/2006 19:52

The thing I really like it for is the automatic saving feature of emails

so if you are writing one you can either save or it saves automatically so if you leave comp it is still there in draft

NotQuiteCockney · 18/10/2006 19:57

Oh, yes, it automatically saves sent mail, too.

I think part of the point of the invites is to cut down on spamming? Not sure.
