Have done it for years, have tried the nail bite stuff, but just can't give it up, anyone else have these bad kind of habits.

I bit mine for years & years. Now i don't and I have them manicured every two weeks.
I stopped by wearing false nails and saw how nice they looked.

Am very shallow

babster · 20/04/2004 20:06

Yes, I've bitten mine for most of my life and have to be very relaxed to not have the urge. Dh hates it and thinks it's worse than nose-picking (is he mad?). They are quite long at the moment thanks to... having a child in nappies! The thought of biting them after wiping bums does put me right off. The perfect cure!

baldrick · 20/04/2004 20:06

Ney kayleigh, very sensible, some habits are sooo hard to break, like smoking and drinking...we all do one or 'tother.

I've bitten them most of my life. For some reason I managed to stop when I was in the 6th form and loved them. Then I started nursing, had to cut them short, and gradually started nibbling again. They're not horribly gnawed, I just don't need scissors or a nail file to keep them trimmed!

Hulababy · 20/04/2004 20:13

I do and I hate it I have tried all the polishes, nasty stuff on fingers... I just can't find the cure for me - yet! I have o will power I think, and I know I bite them more when stresses, and often I am not conscious of the fact I bite them. I'd love to have lovely nails to manicure though. Any known cure???

I am making aure I don't in front of 24mo DD as much as I can at the moment as I saw her bite her nails the other day. No way am I letting her get into that habit!

stupidgirl · 20/04/2004 20:26

I have always bitten my nails. I did give up at one point (willpower)for a while, but I've started again. I bite them whenever I'm stressed, I keep them short anyway.

Dd, who's 3, has bitten hers since she was small, which I'm pretty ashamed about

CountessDracula · 20/04/2004 20:28

I bite mine out of laziness

I have to have them short as have eczema and if I grow them I wake up covered in huge scratches! Too lazy to cut them every day so just have a little nibble and then file the ends. They are not horribly bitten though IYKWIM.

the only time I now bite them nervously is at football matches

Linnet · 20/04/2004 21:30

I have bitten my nails for as long as I can remember.

The only time I've had truly lovely nails was when I got married 2 years ago and I got false nails put on, they were lovely but to expensive to keep up after the wedding so I took them off.

My nails can be quite soft and I can let them grow but after a while they will catch and rip so I have to nibble them to sort them out, too short to file. I do have nail hardner which seems to make a difference, just need to keep them out of my mouth.

collision · 20/04/2004 21:33

I used to and then got some nail pills from Boots which made them grow stronger. i put clear varnish on them and they looked lovely. Now I am PG they are fantastic and I keep admiring them....it is just a shame my skin is the pits!!

Nutcracker · 20/04/2004 21:35

I do, and i can't stop unless i'm pregnant. With all 3 pregnancies i've had lovely long nails but then as soon as baby arrives i start chewing them again.

Tommy · 20/04/2004 21:35

I am a nail biter.
I managed to give up about 15 years ago (nail bite stuff and filing every day to get rid of jaggedy edges) but I still do it when I'm bored or drunk

baldrick · 20/04/2004 21:41

glad it's not just me, used to chew all my dolls hands and my mothers dresses (dressing up ones that is). file them, they look nice and then I bite them all off.....at least would never scare anyone on a full moon

I don't bite mine, but I am crap at cutting and filing my right nails with my left hand (am right-handed) Anyone else find it tricky?

I can remember biting my nails from the age of 4 and i am 25 today, so thats alot of years biting. My mum said when i was younger said they'd buy me a gold ring if i stopped it, but i still haven't. I chew them without even realising that i am doing it, i tried that nail bite stuff, hail polish, false nails, you name it i tried it. I am still chewing today. I wish i could stop but i just don't seem to be able to.

marialuisa · 21/04/2004 11:04

I've bitten my nails for as long as I can remember and have no desire to quit. I actually have reasonable nails as I don't feel compelled to gnaw constantly. I'm half hoping that DD will pick up the habit as i hate cutting her nails (makes me feel sick). I can't do nail varnish or toenail varnish though, too cack-handed!

Mum2Ela · 21/04/2004 12:25

I am a picker - have picked my nails off for as long as I can remember. Only had lovely (false) nails for my wedding!

Angeliz · 21/04/2004 12:33

I bite mine, they are not nice

I don't only bite the nails, i bite the fingers right down!

Always have done, i stopped once for a few weeks and when i visited my dad he didn't believe they were real! I found it amazing to be able to 'tap' on stuff

Same old story though, once you're stressed about something, you bite again. I consider it one of my least worrying habits!!!

susanmt · 21/04/2004 13:47

I only managed to stop twice, when I got engaged adn again for my wedding. THey don't look badly chewed but they are short - but with 3 kids under 5 long nails would just be impractical!
My mum has great nails, maybe when the kids are a bit bigger I will try again!
Dh picks the sides of his fingers till they bleed when he is stressed. YUK!

bran · 22/04/2004 11:08

I used to bite mine unconsciously but DH cured me. Whenever he saw me with my hand in my mouth he would slap my hand with an open palm. It used to give me a shock, seeing his hand come across in front of my eyes, a loud slap and a stinging sensation in my hand. After a few weeks I would feel nervous if my hand was near my mouth even if he wasn't around and eventually I stopped altogether. Brutal, but effective. I know someone who had a very good result from hypnotherapy though, much less painful, but more expensive.

marialuisa · 22/04/2004 11:14

Have to say bran I think my DH would end up with more than he bargained for if he tried that one with me!

One of my earliest memories (would have bben about 2.6y) is of being in nursery and biting the thumbnail of my LH until it bled. It really hurt but I remember discretely sucking my thumb to stop the blood because I was scared the ogre of a tecaher would tell me off.

bran · 22/04/2004 17:24

Sometimes I did slap him back marialuisa, but he usually managed move out of arm's reach in time.

Don't tell him anyone, but I'm actually really, really grateful to him as I had been trying to give up for about 10 years before that.

baldrick · 22/04/2004 17:47

lol bran at the nerve! but glad it worked for you, if I slapped my dh when I bit my nails do you think it would cure it

ponygirl · 22/04/2004 18:19

I've bitten my nails since I stopped sucking my thumb and I've tried the nasty-tasting stuff too, but I just got used to it and the impulse to bite was stronger than the yuck of the stuff. I've actually stopped at the moment (it's been about two months, which is good for me) and they look really nice, so I'm really hoping I'll stick with it. Maybe re-reading this thread if I get the urge will do the trick? Good luck to anyone trying to stop - whenever I have managed to stop it's been willpower, which has been quite surprising really, as I don't actually have any!

Demented · 23/04/2004 14:32

I bit my nails until about 6 months pg with DS2 then they changed and were really strong and hard. I didn't want to bite them then, DS2 is almost two and apart from the occasional nibble I have not returned to full scale nail biting (and hope I don't). My nails are no where near as strong as they were when I was pg though and do have a tendancy to split/break if I let them get too long.
