Do you live by the sea ???

Nutcracker · 19/04/2004 13:07

and if so how often do you use the beach ??

I was discussing this with my mom, me saying that i'd have a walk on the beach every day, take the kids to play on there all the time e.t.c.
My mom reckons that alot of people probably get bored of it and end up going to the beach as often as people who just holiday there.

Just being nosey really

the inlaws live 10 mins away from the beach (north devon) and we usually visit it once a week when down there... the novelty value does wear off when it's on your doorstep day in and day out! although a lot depends on the weather as well!... and also inlaws have a small holding so there is always something else to do... literally on the doorstep! (this easter it was feeding piglets and pet lambs!)

Noddy5 - I know!! We've needed a deli for ages! Haven't been in it but DP says it has a 'posh' sarnie selection. My kids are 18 mths and 4. Waiting to see where the 4 yr old is going - Downs first choice. We hear later this month. Are you moving out of 5ways then? Which shop....or are you keen on protecting your anonymity?!

noddy5 · 19/04/2004 15:16

Jimmychoos my son is at Downs its a great school we are only moving from edburton avenue to hythe road so even closer to the new deli!

I live in Blackpool quite near to the beach but the locals never use it. It's not very clean If you go a bit further along you get to St Annes which has got quite a nice beach but we rarely make the effort. I think you do tend to take it for granted when you live so near.

jimmychoos · 19/04/2004 15:20

...and closer to Ravens - always a bonus. I probably know you by sight - how strange....

i am always rushing dragging a 9 yr old boy with me!Spend lots of time in Blakers park with ds and his friends.Love this area My ds wouldn't consider living anywhere else so we think he can cope with 3 streets away!

live near the sea - about a 20 min walk or 10 min bike ride. we have a special cafe ot "our" end of the sea front - away fro the twon centre. we always stop there for a coffee when going for a walk or a bike ride - which we do a lot in summer - we take the dog to the beach and chuck her in the sea. last year the twins went swimming in the sea it was that hot. hubby isnt a beach person - so when i am pissed off i take the kids and let them drown one another whilst i read some trashy non brain taxing book until i have finished.

we dont go every week in winter or autumn but spring and summer is great. i only moved here 2 years ago - and the funniest thing is - i resent the tourists! however with our northern accents we often get the rolled eyes of the locals too!

hubby knows when i am feeling down if he makes me walk or ride to the beach - even if i really really dont want to - i always cheer up having a coffee at "our" little cafe at "our" end of the beach

I love the way you can find your own little bit of a beach. We inevitably always sit at the same spot and it cheers me up no end.I think sometimes just looking at the sea and the enormity of it helps put things in perspective. It's a great place to think

Nooooo - I'm just up the road from you in Clacton I am a Colchester girl born and bred though!!

I know exactly what you mean about the "tourists" LOL! I am exactly the same - they drive me potty. Particularly bad in the summer when they're walking up our road - the Holiday Camp is at one end - the beach at the other and as they go past, they have a good look through peoples windows/back gardens etc.

This weekend a group of them were walking past, I was in the shrubs doing some gardening (garden has huge shrubs in front) and they were peering in through our window from the road and trying to peer through the back gate which was open - that is until I stood up right in front of them, asking if they wanted to come in and have a good look around Frightened the living daylights out of them though LOL!

And yes, I have "MY" section of the beach and I sit in the same place every time - woe betide anyone who dares to sit there LOL!

Crunchie · 19/04/2004 16:34

Then why didn't you come along to the meet-up in Colchester then??

wickedstepmum · 19/04/2004 16:58

The sea is a 15 minute drive away and we go there at least once a week in the winter and 2 or 3 times a week in the summer. I love it at all times. Crowded and hot and deserted, windy and cold. The best bit, of course, is 'our' beach. It is a five minute walk round the corner from the main sandy stretch and there is always plenty of space - rocks, sand, seaweed and waves. Fabulous.

Angeliz · 19/04/2004 17:02

We live right by the sea, 10 minutes either way.
We are at the beach at least a few times a week, even in the winter!
Has always been my favourite place

suedonim · 19/04/2004 17:04

I don't live by the sea now but I did as a child. We went to the beach almost every day in summer, provided it wasn't raining. And my mum's cure for a winter cold was a bracing march along the seafront. It certainly cured the cold - you had pneumonia by the next day!

tabitha · 19/04/2004 17:12

Lived by the sea (rural rather than resort beach but still could get pretty busy with day-trippers in summer) from ages 10 to 19 and went there loads, even in winter - in fact I prefered it in winter esp on a really windy day.
Live miles from it now and really miss it

Couldn't come to the Meet-up as one of the girls left work that day and there was a meal out afterwards.

Also, bit of a scaredy-cat when it comes to meeting people off the "net"

grumpyzebra · 19/04/2004 19:34

MIL and her husband live 5 minute walk from the beach in Essex; they go swimming 2x, sometimes 3x/day in summer. They probably do a beach-side walk about 4-5x/week in winter (partly because they walk the dogs religiously 2x/day).
I think with the children we'd be down there daily in summer if we moved to North Norfolk coast (still one of our options).

Cam · 21/04/2004 21:30

Have lived on s. coast for 20 years now (god is it that long?) inc. Brighton. Now live further east on coast, 2 mins walk from beach. "Have to" see sea every day (even if just driving along road to take dd to school) but fave beach thing is Camber Sands (a few miles away round the "corner" out of season.
