Toys that aren't toys...

As I was watching dd this morning play with her absolutely favorite thing in the world - a plastic medicine dropper - I wondered what other curious items babies/toddlers have made into toys that were never intended as such?

And thought it would be interesting to hear from other mothers what has placated babies at desperate moments...dd also just loves tubes of diaper ointment! When I am changing her, it is the only thing that will keep her from squirming off the table!

Obviously remote controls and telephones (but this is universal, isn't it?). He has recently discovered the difference between the two and starting turning the TV on with the remote instead of sticking it to his ear. Unfortunately he still thinks my contraceptive pills are a telephone and presses the "buttons" and wanders round the bedroom with them stuck to his ear!!!

Also lid of cup, tea strainer, contents of DH's sock drawer, plant pots, sudocrem, coasters, an individual baby wipe (loves playing at blowing his nose), a hairbrush, my slippers, the settee cushions (pretend to sleep like at nursery) and my Paco Rabbane Ultraviolet perfume (the one in the egg shaped bottle - the shape seems to fascinate him).

He also once got in a strop in the bathroom when I was opening a tampon because he thought it was food and wanted a bite.

My ds loves the cardboard tube on the inside of a roll of wrapping paper. Great for hitting you with, like a sword (so much for politically correct toyes!) - but also for blowing down and he's just realised you can make fun noises down it as well.

He also enjoys getting the cheese grater out of the cupboard and feeling the "scrapy" bits.

Due to DS's obsession with phones we got my last mobile out of the loft, took the battery out and gave it to him. Did this work? What do you think? Its been discarded in his block truck and he still tries to pinch all the other phones.
